your reply was rude
Reply: If you are referring to the entry below, I was merely noting that the use of all CAPS is the equivalent of shouting in someone's ear. If it was intended as such, I apologize. I certainly wasn't trying to be "rude."
JUST WANTED TO SAY CONGRADULATIONS TO THE STERLING KNIGHTS SYAA 70'S CHEERLEADING SQUAD!!!!! THEY CAME IN FIRST PLACE AT THE NOVEMBER 4 COMPETITION! THESE FIVE AND SIX YEAR OLDS REALLY WORKED HARD AND WE ARE VERY PROUD OF THEM!!!!! GO GIRLS!!!!!!!

I am searching for an Erickson family that lived in Pine Hill, NJ in the 60's and 70's. The mothers name may be Margaret, she had 4 children, and lived on W. Cloverdale Ave. A member of that family is searching for them. Please if you know of this family, contact me. Medical reasons apply.
Very nice website. I didn't even know that Stratford had a website! I enjoyed it alot but wish that there was more information on sports for the little kids. My daughter is six years old and on the Sterling Knights 70's team and I can't find any information on it.
Reply: Thanks Bridgette. Sorry, I wish I had more information on the Knights. Maybe someone will see this and start sending me info. If I had a schedule, I'd post it. My son is on the 120 lb. team but, missed the schedule-handing-out part. I did, however, just post some pictures from Sunday's game at Hagerty Field.
Reply to George Brennen's comments regarding his son's feelings on Stratford car photos Hey George remind your son Sean to "Never rule out the power of Cheese."
Reply: Right on, Don
I like the web page but I can't get the photo index it freezes up the computer. Lets make sure that the old laurel mills market doesn't turn into something that will drag down the property values. It's already an eye sore! The old man who owned it sure took his good old time dropping dead! Now he's gone lets make the kids sell the property to say.....Super "G". No low income anything!!!!
Oh, by the way. Sean Brennan from the Rhode Island School of Design is my son and thinks your pictures out of your window of your car looks cheesey. I on the other hand appreciate your hard work in bringing a little piece of home back to ex-stratfordians. p.s. I think your dash board needs to be detailed.
Also, why couldn't all those magnolia people have stayed in magnolia. We always told them Stratford was a better town. Maybe they finally broke the code. Couldn't they have moved to somerdale!
Reply: Sorry about the photo index problem, George. There's nothing there that should make your computer lock up, though.
I lived on Academy Drive from 1963-78, and my mom and dad were lucky enough to live there the rest of their lives. Mom volunteered many years in the library and substitute taught in Warwick school, (now Yellin), and Sterling. Fortunately for me, she didn't sub in either place while I attended! I was in SHS class of '71. My first place on my own, (besides college), was a condo at Sterling Arms. I've moved around to several different towns and states since then, but will always remember growing up in Stratford. This great site really took me back. Remember ice skating on Laurel Lake? It always seemed like, whenever I got skates for Christmas we'd have a mild winter, and the lake wouldn't freeze over until the following year, when I'd have to cram my feet into those skates. These days my wife, son and I still live in South Jersey- Deptford. It would be great to hear from any old friends, especially any guys from "111."
got a kick showing the kids the old dam where i fished as a kid!
Grew up in Stratford from 1958 to 1980. I was trasferred to Ohio in 1997 to work on an engineering project for B.P. Oil. Have lived here ever since. Graduated from Sterling in 1977. If anyone remembers me, please email me. I love to here from you.
Just want to say I didn't live in Stratford, I lived in Somerdale but went to Sterling, so I paled around with a lot of Stratford students. If any of the class of 62,63,64,65 are out there drop a line. This site is great. When you look at alot of the pictures and can say I remember that, you know you are getting up there so enjoy what you have now.
Hope to hear from some old friends, Joe AhernNice sight. I lived in Stratford from 1954-1975. I was on the fire dept. 1973-1975 till I moved to St.Petersburg, Fl. and made a career with their fire dept. Thanks for keeping the up dates. My father Robert H. Jones is on the WW II memorial. My brother Bob moved to Cal. The only family now is the Mackins & Clements
This was really nice to reminiss about my growing up and remembering the things mentioned in the article, I will check back later to see what has been done here.
I reviewed the names of veterans. My father's name from WWII and my brothers name from Viet Nam war are both mispelled. Could that be corrected? My father is Milton R. Waters not Milton L. Waters and my brother is Milton R. Waters, Jr and (not) Reymard Waters. Thanks
Reply: All taken care of, Joyce. The mistake with your father's middle initial was probably my fault since I scanned the newsletter, as noted on the page. I would have to believe that your brother's name does, in fact, appear as Reymard and not as Milton R., Jr. on the memorial since scanning doesn't usually miss by that much. Anyway, I changed both (you may have to "refresh" the page). Thanks for the info. Joe
This site is really memorable. I grew up in Stratford form 1948-1968. I married in 68 and lived around the country for 4 years while my husband was in the military, then moved back to Berlin area and have been here ever since. I have watched Stratford grow and progress into a wonderful place. Thanks for the site Joyce Waters Hopkins
What a great site. The monthly pictures are great and I shared them with Cub Pack 222. I also enjoy all the history.
THANKS!!!
Hi. I lived in Stratford for 25 years and moved to Erial when I got married. We hope to move back so our children can grow up in a great neighborhood. I love this site. I graduated fron SHS in 1979 and would like to say hi to all my fellow graduates.
Hi... posted here early on with a different e-mail address. Just wanted to say the site has really grown, and I for one am glad to see the old time pictures (Yes, Sean is a Stratford resident).
I'm really greatful for all the news. My parents have lived in Stratford for about 30 years, and I wind up telling them news about town from this site. And, I browse this site while away at college in central MD!
Anyway, I'm St. Luke class of '93, SHS class of '97, and, as of Sat., WMC class of 2001! Coming home to Stratford soon.
To whomever e-mailed me a long time ago about the Stratford Library, I'm very sorry I never replied. The e-mails got bounced around from account to account, and I lost track of time.
Longwood Dr. here I come (even with your awful, noisy speed hump outside my house)!

My Grandfather William George Horisk was a Stratford native. I am looking for information on his father - William Clayton Horisk, who died in 1943. I am also interested in finding out his father's name. Any information would be fantastic.
Yo! I miss Stratford!! Hope youz all still having fun... love michele
I used to live at 16 Jefferson until the early 1950's. I now live and teach in SC. I remember the Andersons very well. There are so many memories in that small town. Went to the OLD school and then student-taught at Yellin with Sue Lee in 1975. You had great teachers in the school system! I am still using "teaching-tricks" they taught me....The kids there were great!!! Some of the best I have had in my 23 yrs of teaching!!!
Nice job on this site.
Reply: Thanks, Tony
Hey! Just stopped by and wanted to say Hi to Adam Whitcher!! I love You!!
Reply to Sean Brennan comments of 03/21/01 Sean - your comments are most inappropriate. I hope that college you are attending in Rhode Island provides classes in good manors. The webmaster of this site has put a tremedous effort into keeping it up with local news and features of interest to the residents and former residents of Stratford. What may not be of interest to you is of great interest to others. You never indicated if you lived in Stratford - could be that is why photos mean nothing to you. Don Gray St Augustine FL
Reply: Thanks, Don.
Quickly - before I am caught - So I spelled manners wrong!!! So I never graduated from college - what do can you expect from a 10th grade dropout perfect grummer, I mean gummer, I mean gammer - oh hell! I think it is both grammer and spelling. Forgive me for both.
Hi, im in college right now in Rhode Island, and i was looking for something online when i stumbled upon this webpage. I was looking at the photos--are you serious with them?? Who is taking these things? The ones taken from the car were especially ridiculous. Screen the photos for god-sakes---
p.s. the other photos weren't to great either.
Reply: Wasn't quite sure just how to respond to this one. In regards to the photos: Yes, I suppose I'm serious with them. They are not intended to be printed out and framed though. As far as the "car" photos are concerned, most of the new ones are taken from the car (sometimes while actually moving). I don't really get a chance to walk around town taking pictures. I think they serve their purpose. I'm not sure why you would consider them ridiculous, perhaps you are in some sort of photography class there at school and therefore qualified to criticize them. I do screen the photos, I take out the really bad ones. The use of thumbnails for all of the pictures let's you, the reader, also screen them. Storage space is not an issue so I don't get too involved with weeding out what may not be the best possible shot. If you can point me or our visitors to your photos or any other photos on the web that we might find interesting, please do so. Sorry to have wasted so much of your important time with my photos and feel free to print out the ones you like. Joe
Hello! I'm am in need of ideas. I am going to be running a project of collecting soda can tabs, but i need a charitable place to give the money to. Email me if you know of any local organizations in need, or even individuals in need. Please get back to me ASAP. *p.s I DO live in stratford :0)
Reply: How about the Stratford Historical Society (Quaker Store renovation) or Stratford Online!
Anyone know if Stratford Ambulance is looking for new volunteers? I sit for the state test on March 8th and I'm curious to their membership status.

Nice to see this site still up and running. I love reading about the ole landmarks and familiar names of Stratford. I occasionally ride by my old house on Parkview Road to see how things changed..looks pretty much the same since I left in '79. Anyone from Class of '74 attend last reunion in '99? What's the scoop! Would love to hear from some classmates of St. Lukes Class of 1970!!!

The Lang Family had a Bakery in Lindenwold and Stratford, and have lived im Stratford on Yale since 1958. Three kids all went to grade school at Princeton School and Sterling High. Debbie is a nurse at Cooper, Lenny is at the Dept. of Agriculture in Washington and John works at Rohm and Hass. Best wishes and good health to all.
We would love to hear from anyone we've lost contact with over the years.
Hi Stratford, I know that it is probably early, but is there any talk about SHS Reunion for the class of 1971 yet? Thirty years.....My husband Bill from Magnolia was wondering.

Hello Stratford, New Jersey from Stratford Ontario Canada. Our city has about 30,000. We have the famous Shakespeare Festival. It attracts thousands of people every summer. Stratford was picked as the most beautiful city in bloom in the world. If anyone ever gets a chance, please come and visit our beautiful city. You won't be disappointed.
A woman who lives in Stratford may be the half-sister we have been searching for for years. Stephanie O'Malley is her name and we believe she may have graduated from Cedar Ridge High School in Old Bridge, NJ. Her name at graduation was Stephanie Nannery. Would you happen to know this person? Every Christmas our wish is to find her. Warmest regards---- Barb Nannery in Ocean Springs, MS
I was a Stratford resident from age 6 to 11, moving away in 1949. Fondest of memories, i.e. Princeton Avenue School, Sam's Diner, and all those wide open spaces. Wish I could contact some former residents from back then, e.g, Harry Moffett, Jill Armstrong, the Sapio's. Columbia Avenue had 9 red brick houses on it then. How many on it now, I wonder? Population then was 900. Now it's nearly 3,000. Gad!
Hi Joe just wanted you to know that I got here, after a little bit of trying.
Reply: 'bout time! Hey, let me know when that Firebird goes to the junkyard and I'll pick it over!
I wanted to search the website of a "Stratford Institute", was too lazy to use a search engine, blindly entered "stratford.net", and found your site. Spent almost an hour in studying it.... very nice. I wish you all the best!

What is a good way to find people I knew growing up in Laurel Springs, using the Net? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Tom Cook.....
Reply: Tom, you could try this AT&T site. Just put in Laurel Springs' Zip Code and it will list everyone living in town. As far as people who used to live in town, your pretty much on your own. Laurel Springs does not appear to have a website up this time. There a a few sites that let you search for people but, unless those people have registered with the site, it won't find them. Pretty lame. The site I listed above is pretty good. It appears to use the phone book so, if someone has an unlisted number, they won't show up. It will also let you find everyone on a particular street if you like or just search by name. Lots of options. This site is listed on this website under Other Weblinks
Great web page! Thanks to Tom McGettigan for the tip. Are you the same Joe Emerson who grew up in Magnolia and has a brother named Jim? If so, I went to grammar and high school with your brother when I was Carol Anne Wilson. How is he? Your mom?
Reply: Thanks, Carol. Thanks, Tom. I am the same Joe Emerson who grew up in Magnolia. Are you the Carol Anne Wilson who lived on Wilson? My brother, Jim has been in the Marine Corp since 1976 (right out of high school) and currently is a Lieutenant Colonel stationed in Washington state. He's ready to retire (lucky guy) next year. My mother passed away in November of 1994. Is your brother John Wilson, the football referee?
Stratford kid on Warwick Rd til 1973. Married Terri Clarke. Now living in MD. Two older brothers John and Joe. All from SHS. Would like to here from anyone. Great Web Page....Keep up the good work.....a toast to Sam Yellin and Dr Herring.....
Reply: Thanks, Mike. Growing up in Magnolia, you'll have to help me here...who was Dr. Herring?
Mike's Reply: Joe, First I would like to thank you for bringing back so many memories.Checking out your site has reunited me with a few old friends from the 50's and 60's. It baffles me to think I've been away from Stratford for almost 30 years but I can still hear the train whistle and see the fireworks in Laurel Springs on the 4th after a day of parade up Warwick Rd to end up at the field on Vasser to play ball. Not to mention watching the expansion of what was then Warwick School to the construction of St. Lukes and lets not forget getting a city sewer system. Oh the memories..... Thank you again...... As for Dr. Herring. He lived and worked out of his home on I think Longwood Drive. His house was directly behind the old A&P. As I recall there were only three doctors. Herring, Lippincott and Banardi. Dr. Herring still made house calls in 71'. Last I heard he was doing some teaching at Kennedy Hospital. As for Sam Yellin, Stratford's first Chief of Police. He was more of a town father than a cop. He would stand in for Sally the crossing guard at the intersection of Warwick and Longwood Dr by the old 7-11. I can remember riding in his unmarked police car wanting to listen to his police radio. I think the Yellins lived on Winding Way. Sam, his daughter Michelle, my father and myself would go crabbing on weekends. As I recall he died during gallbladder surgery at West Jersey Hospital. Keep up the good work!!!!
Reply: As a local (now-off-the-air) talk-radio host in Philly says "thanks for giving back!" Thanks again, Mike.
Don Lewis ( dojos@aol.com ) replied on 25-Oct:
HI! As for the doctors in town, back in the late fifties and sixties there were two more doctors - Harold Coxson and Dr. Sullivan. They shared an office building on Laurel Rd. next to what is now the hospital. The building is still there. Dr. Sullivan lived on the corner of Warwick Rd. and Laurel Rd.. Rumor had it that he had one of the only underground bomb shelters in town. Dr. Herring was also the school doctor for many years. Most kids might remember him that way. As for the 7-11 - anyone else remember watching the Kuehner house being moved to make way for the 7-11?? Anyone know how to get in touch with Mr. Higgins from Warwick/Yellan School?
Bob Reif ( reif@leland.stanford.edu ) replied on 25-Oct:
Hey Don, I remember well the move of the Kuehner house to down by the tracks and also when they burnt down the old farm house where the A & P store was built. So many memories....

Joe, Your site continues to be a great source of catch up reading for this displaced resident. I've been gone for 21 years and lived in Stratford for my first 23 years before that. (Two more years here and I'll be a Californian!:))...The job you do on this web site is FANTASTIC! Truely a dynamic site- I check it daily and appreciate the effort you put into it. Congratulations too, to Stratford Fire Company and another GREAT Wildwood! I'm glad to see so many names I still recognize... keep up the good work. Great job on the web page, loved the old pics. I'll be stopping back.
Reply: Thanks, Vinnie. If you can get your hands on any old pictures, let me know and we'll get them up.
This is a great web page,as a matter of fact it is better then the borough`s.I wish people would talk to some members of council, before they bash them. I am willing to talk to any one at any time, if some one has a question or concern. my phone # is no secret, it's in the phone book. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ON THIS SITE, IT SHARES A LOT OF GOOD INFO THANKS. MATT REBECCA
Reply: Good to hear from you again, Matt. As I'm always saying, we sure could use some old (even new) pictures from around town. If we only knew someone with ties to the Borough that might be able to help. Hmmm....
Oh, I agree with you completely that this site is better than the borough's.
My compliments on your web page. I lived in Stratford on and off when I was growing up with my grandfather Ed Herbert, who was the Stratford Fire Chief for many years and built many of the houses in Stratford. Your web page showed me things I haven't seen in years, including the school I went to as a small child across the street fom my grandfather's house on Princeton Ave. Thank you for the memories.
P.S. Does Webers still sell the awesome Root Beer?
Reply: Well, since I'm on a roll pushing for pictures...any chance of getting an old picture of your grandfather, Robert? A nice old one, perhaps in front of the fire house? That'd be nice. Let me know.
FORMERLY OF EVERGREEN RD. LAUREL MILL FARM FOR 31 YEARS. NOW A RESIDENT OF WESTON FLORIDA FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS. ANY FROM STRATFORD AREA HERE IN SOUTH FLORIDA?
Reply: Still pushing for pictures here...Thirty-one years! You must have some pictures!
Wow, the memories that this has brought back. I was born in camden in 1963 was brought home to 105 Harvard Ave. I lived there till 2nd grade at Princeton ele. I noticed that two of my brothers wrote in here and recollect a lot that I do and then some. so I won't go back over that. But I do want to say that I had a dear friend in school there that I still think of often. Vickie Yeaster was her name. Sure wish I new how she is doing. I also have not heard anyone mention the small one person store that you could drive your car or bike upto and get just about anything you could get from a convenient store. it was a little green shop the woman would slide a door open when you pulled up and she hardly had enough room to turn around. must of been in the late 60's. oh yea ... the mayor ..who ever he was back then ... was speeding down Harvard Ave. And hit me when I was crossing the road. he was real nice about it .. Felt real bad and visited me in the hospital. Well, I am about to say hello to a lot of families ... Forgive me for misspelling your names ..but I was only 7 when I moved. Hello to the Gambian family, Herbert family, Duckett family, Mcgee family, Lyons family, whorton family, heaster family, and the little old lady who lived next door and always gave me girl scout mint chocolate cookies. Love the memories.... Barbara "franchuk" plante, p/s I have many many articles from the turbulent 60's and 70's about Stratford if anyone is interested. along with a bunch of election pins from the area. Don't know how I ended up with them but I got them nonetheless.
Reply: Send them here!!!
Hello, I found the website just a few days ago from the SAO website, and I have to say that I am glad to see it. I grew up in Magnolia but, I have been a Stratford resident for about eight years now. My wife grew up here in the house across the street from where we live right now. My mother-in-law runs the Stratford Library (Ruth Roderick). I have been talking with her about building a website for the library. I'd like to list this page as a link (if you don't mind). That page should be around soon, but we are still in the idea phase for now. I'll let you know when it's up. I'm glad that the residents have a place to get information and sound off about pertinant issues (see my rant on the Discussion Web). Keep up the good work. Kevin
Reply: Small world, Kevin. I, too grew up in Magnolia (612 Brooks, down the street from the Fiberglas field) but, have been a Stratford resident for almost 12 years now. My wife and I live across the street from her brother...anyway, it is true.
Let me know when you get the site together for the Library. That's a great idea. Several people have inquired here over the years about doing something for the Library. Unfortunately, I've never found too much on the subject. Keep in touch.
I just got done viewing a lot of Stratford pictures in this website which brought back old memories. I lived in Somerdale, but was one of the top springboard divers for the diving team (very few of us then) at Stratford Swim Club in the 70s. My last diving season was summer of '80 or '79. 20 years ago! I think I've ridden on just about every street in Stratford on my trusty blue Schwinn (now I own a Trek 7500 Multitrack hybrid bike ... smile). I do recognize the 4th of July parade route. I was sorry to see that Stratford Swim Club no longer has a 3-meter springboard. Lots of changes since I left for Washington, DC to pursue my college education at Gallaudet University. Sterling High has changed, too! I'll be back in town for the class of 1980 reunion this November. See y'all then. Monica
STRATFORD RESIDENT FOR 32 YEARS. LIVED IN LAUREL MILL FARM. MOVED TO FT LAUDERDALE AREA 2 YEARS AGO. WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANY THAT MOVED HERE. WENT TO ST. LUKES AND KIDS WENT TO STERLING. JUST FOUND THIS SITE. HOPE SOMEONE E-MAILS ME. WOULD LOVE TO COMMUNICATE.
You get many complements on the web site - you deserve them - it is really great. What pleasure - what wonderful memories you have brought back to us. What can we say but thank you.
Your website has brought back so many memories - so glad we found it. Thank you for these moments. Will be in touch with the information shortly. We may have other Stratford memorabilia about and we will look for it. Again - thankyou thankyou thankyouNote: These comments were taken, with permission, from emails I received from Don and Janice, who sent us the picture of the Class of 51.
Whoever sees this, I need help. I need the address of the Stratford records office. I need a copy of my birth certificate and have been to date unable to locate the address. Please send any and all replys to the address above. Thanx for your help
Stumbled across your article about Chuck McCormick. Was wondering if you knew that current Stratford resident and former Magnolia resident, Bill Schroeder (Macrophage) was involved in the scandle as well. As I understand there may be criminal charges pending as well as a few civil suits. There are some number of current Stratford residents that were burned by the scheme.
Reply: I heard Bill was with Chuck but, from what I heard, Chuck is on his own on this. I may be wrong. I have also heard that some residents were taken by this scheme. I know at least one (and no, it wasn't me). Damn ex-Magnolia people...
By the way, JB, how did you "stumble" across the article?
In the 7 and a half years I lived in Stratford I have come to realize what a special place it was for me. The time I spent in Stratford were the best years I have spent in my young adult life. I still have a lot of friends who still live in Stratford. I miss the town it's people and places like the swim club and the playgrounds at Haggerty and Vasser. The schools I went to (Yellin and Sterling) gave me the tools to succeed in life. I live in Pine Hill now, but I miss Stratford a lot.
Hi Joe... I just enjoyed looking at the July 4th pictures and catching up with some of the later comments. We were up in Stratford over the week of the 4th but stayed in Berlin at daughter Carol (Ryker) Chojnacki's home. Carol was just installed last week as the first female president of the Berlin Rotary. I wanted to look you up while I was there but never found the time. I did get to see the remodeling work that son Kenneth did on the old Post Office building. He is quite an accomplished artist with wood. Takes after his grandad, not me. I really enjoy your page and like to read the residents comments both old and new. Stratford is a great place to raise children and I have many fond memories of our thirty years there.
Reply: As always, E.W., good to hear from you. Thanks. And congratulations to your daughter.
i enjoyed this web page. it conveys a lot of info.i liked the pictures and the local news (even the council bashing) p.s . speed humps are different then speed bumps.
Reply: Thanks for clearing that hump/bump thing up, Matt. I'm assuming a hump is bigger than a bump, although not necessarily more effective. Any additional information would certainly be welcome. Nothing personal with the council-bashing, OK? Finally, I do believe congratulations are in order! Congratulations.
My sister Carol Chojnacki (Ryker) just mentioned to me last night that her 30 year class reunion is this year from Sterling and as of yet, has heard nothing. Does anyone know if they are having one?
Reply: Nothing yet, I guess....
Reply October 11, 2000: Bob Wallace sent the following information...
Hi I was delighted when I ran across the Stratford web. page. It is so nice to hear all the young people say such nice things about their home town.We have lived in this town since 1954. It was a wonderful town to raise our 4 children. Patricia,Richard,James and Danny. Some of our grandchildren have also had the pleasure of growing up in Stratford. We have seen a lot of changes. Laurel Mills was a Dairy farm. St Lukes was a horse farm. We had no mail delivery we had to go to a private home, the front enclosed porch served a the P.O We had party lines (on telephones) some times there would be 4 people on one line. We had just one Dr. that was Dr. Lippencott. The closest market was in Haddonfield (Acme) We were very active in the Stratford Father and Son Assoc. I served as President of the Auxiliary for 2 years and my husband Jack was Pres. of the Father and Sons for 1 yr. along with a lot of our good friends, the Singers,Lowdens,Franchucks,Humes,we all were dedicated members of that org. We had a lot of fun and we have so many wonderful memories of things we shared with friends and our children. This is a great page keep it going.
Reply: Thank You
Nice website! Any chance you could include a link to Sterling's Class of 1980 reunion information Page?

Hi how is everybody its Harry Cook I am glad that I live in stratford I am a junior firefighter in Stratford NJ I also attend Sterling high school Stratford is the best!!!
Recently discovered this site and really have enjoyed reading the comments from current and prior residents of Stratford. I lived in the town from 1959 until 1982 on Princeton Ave. and have many wonderful memories. Through the years, I attended Princeton School, the Methodist Church in 2nd grade, Yellin School, and finally, Sterling High School which I graduated from in 1975. I now live in PA but do visit my old homestead from time to time. Keep this site going,.....it's been a great way to joggle my memory.
Editor's Note: Stratford Online (www.stratford.net) is the oldest active Internet Website devoted almost exclusively to the residents of Stratford, NJ. Don't forget to check out what's new on the site. New content is noted on the Home page. This week we added some photos of 50's era Stratford that were taken from an article in the Spring issue of South Jersey Magazine. This article was sent in by an avid fan of Stratford Online.
Many thanks to J! More from the article will be posted as we secure rights and such <g>.
Reply: Hey, Justin! How's it going? Thanks for signing(?) the guestbook. Now, when you come back here, put something in the Comments box!
Mr. E.
Does anyone out there remember Betty Kearney? She lived in Stratford in the 50s and 60s. She married David Franklin who was from England. They had a little girl Katrina born in 1966. They then went to live in Windsor. Betty had a sister. I think she was called Pat. They both went to school in Stratford. We lost touch with Betty when the marriage broke up and David came back to England. Katrina is my niece and I would love to get in touch again.
Hi. I was looking at the site and the "new" pictures. I believe that the picture that you have labeled as "Oldest House?" may be incorrect. When I was living in town, the oldest house was always said to be a house on Harvard Ave. (I think) close to the White Horse Pike. It originally had been a sheep barn, later the first school (before Princeton) and finally, a home. It was owned in the sixties by friends of my parents. The house pictured looks like the house that originally was a hotel and had the first post office. Of course, this is if my memory serves me correctly but all of this should be documented and easily verified. It's been about 25 years since I lived there, but it's the kind of thing I would remember!
Reply: You may indeed be correct, Don. That's why I put the question mark there. I'm trying to remember where I heard of the location of the supposed oldest home in town. I looked in the only historical reference I have, the 1975 publication, An Environmental History of the Stratford Area and haven't found the answer. The picture in question is at the corner of N. Grande and either Princeton or Union. I'll have to check. In the meantime, the publication mentioned above does state, "The ease of commuting by train also attracted new residents. Chief among them were two men from Camden, Charles King and Harry Smith, who...formed the Rural Land Improvement Company to sell building lots to prospective home owners. King named the development 'Stratford,' and in 1889, the partners started to advertise the 603 lots created from Kaighn and Lippincott farmlands... ." <now known as Old Stratford> "Smith settled in the first house built on the newly divided land, at 107 S. Atlantic, and King took 9-1/2 lots for his house at 201 Princeton." "...the building said to be his (Lippincott's) farmhouse became a summer hotel, the Old Orchard Inn." The Old Orchard Inn (24 rooms) stood at Princeton and Central Aves. I don't know if this helps at all. These houses were apparently not the first, just the first of the newly divided land. If you know where I can get something handy to refer to, i.e., a book, that would be a great help. I'll keep looking. Thanks, Joe.
Hi Joe... It's been a long time. I really want to commend you on what you have done with this page. What a great improvement. I spent a couple hours yesterday just reading everyone's comments and browsing all the links. The school links are exceptional. I finally got my daughter Karen to make an entry in your guestbook and I think it was also well done. I hope some of the Sterling alumni read it and get in touch with her. Our grandaughter Stacy Ryker graduated Sterling last year and is now on a scholarship at Rutgers. There is a photo and a nice writeup on her at http://athletics.rutgers.edu/softball/roster/ryker.htm -Quite an accomplished girl and I know she would like to hear from her Stratford friends at RykS14@aol.com The photos of the town, both old and new, are outstanding and it is good to hear that Mrs Stripoli's Quaker Store will be preserved. It has been twenty one years now since we left Stratford for Fort Myers, FL. Both 75 now but still active and get to commute back home a couple time a year. Keep up the great work, I don't know why your pages are not the official Stratford home page. As ever -- Wayne Ryker
Reply: Always good to hear from you, EW. Glad you like the site. Joe
Hi to all that have lived or is still living in the great town of Stratford. My name is Karen (Ryker) Grubbs and I graduated from Sterling H.S. in 1972. I lived on Vassar Ave, right down the street from Nates Store where the chocolate cokes were awesome. I had some great friends back then, Debbie Byrd, who lives in Colorado, Diane Taylor who lives in Stratford still, Ken Pauro who lives on the Mullica River in Sweetwater and Janice Salvador to mention a few. I was married at the Stratford United Methodist Church in 1973 to my High School sweetheart Bill Grubbs, who lived in Magnolia. We will be celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary this April 28th, 2000. We now live in Erial, New Jersey, with our two daughters, ages 26 and 16, Leona and Dana. My older daughter has a little girl and I am a proud grandmother of Madisyn Sue Grubbs, who is a year old. I have been working for an Engineering Company as a Designer in Cherry Hill called Stone & Webster for the past 25 years. My younger brother Ken Ryker still lives in Stratford on the corner of Vassar and Kirkwood and works for the township. My sister, Carol Chojnacki owns C&J Florist in Berlin and her husband is now the mayor, James Chojnacki. My second brother, Dale lives in West Berlin and doing great and my oldest brother Wayne teaches tennis in Florida. My folks have lived in Fort Myers Florida for over 20 years and are doing well. We all enjoyed going to the ball field to play and also loved the great Carnivals they had at the field too. I remember going to the Quaker store with my Mom, Marcella Ryker, for some milk and other things that she needed. I am glad to see that the town is restoring the building, instead of replacing it with a WAWA or a drug store, which seems to be on every corner these days. Ill never forget all the great times we had sledding down suicide hill or going Christmas Caroling with Terry Delgrosso and Patty Caterman, or playing tennis at the courts near the swim club. I missed seeing Janice Salvendor at the last class reunion and I heard she is doing great. I would love to hear from her or anyone who graduated with me. Also, Ill always remember the great times I had with Mr. Dobbs and the ski club with all the trips to Ski Mountain, which is now turning into a golf resort. This is great to read all the letters from people that you grew up with and havent seen in such a long time.
Reply: Say hi to you're dad for me. I think your father-in-law used to clean my family's heater when I was little. Yes/No? I grew up in Magnolia and remember the Grubbs' house on Warwick Road. Same one?
28-March, Karen's Reply: Hi Joe, Yes my father-in-law, Bill Grubbs Sr, did clean heaters. He passed away this past November at the age of 86. His wife Sue passed away in 1997. His home is up for sale now. It was nice to hear that someone remembered him.
Reply: Two people I'll never forget from growing up...Mr. Uffleman from Audubon who used to fix our television (the kind with tubes!). And Mr. Grubbs, the heater guy.
Hi! I went to Glassboro State back in the mid seventies. I had some great friends from Stratford. If Cindy, Karen or Cathy are still around, drop me an e-mail.
Chris Hansen
I was the guy that KNEW Joe Tansey after he left Stratford, only to end up living in his home town. What a world...
Nice job on the page. The hamman should keep his comments to himself. I've seen his home page;-)
Reply: Who's the hamman?
Mr. Emerson, I just took another look at the updated Stratford website "Stratford Online 2000." I sat and looked at those two pictures of Stratford School until I almost cried. I can still remember the classrooms (and cloakrooms) behind each of those windows, the basement where we had recess during inclement weather, the auditorium where I gave my first "speech." That was 50 years ago. Thanks for the memories!
Reply: You're welcome. I'll try and get some more close-ups. And stop calling me Mr. Emerson! Joe is fine.
Hey Joe...This is great! Thanks......Tim

What a great surprise to see my hometown on the web!! I grew up in Stratford, 17 Warwick Rd then 203 Union Ave. I went to Yellin and Sterling, graduated in 1977. I left NJ for upper NY state in 1980. The last time I was in Stratford I couldn't believe how much it had changed.
My parents still live in NJ but, I don't get a chance to visit very often. My dad, Al, was on Juvenille Conference Committee and both my parents, Al and Marge, were leaders of Explorer Post 189.
Next trip home I'll have to take a ride thru Stratford again. Thanks for putting this web page together. Great Job!!!

John Becker, Nice to see your name. Are you still out there? Remember me ("PITA")?? Times have surely changed! Drop me an email!! John Clark from Union Avenue.
FYI... Dr. Lipincott lived at the end of the street I grew up on ... Union Avenue.
It's nice to see Stratford on the Web! Keep up the great work!!

Hey Joe, don't you think it would be appropriate to add a photo of the Quaker store here since so many people are interested? (!!!New Quaker Store photos are here, 2/12/00)You're doing a great job on the site....I like the link to the Stratford Borough.
Does anyone remember Dr. Lipincott? He made house calls when I was young.I use to hate seeing his big black leather bag! He lived at the end of (can't remember the name of the street but, it intersected with Laural Rd) And what ever happened to the black truck the Stapoli's (from the Quaker store) used to deliver grocries?
A lot to remember!
Reply: Right you are about the photo. I used to have a couple (large) photos here but, they have since been lost I'm afraid. I plan to make the rounds possibly this weekend (2/12-2/13) and get some nice digital pics. As soon as I get them, they'll be posted. I'll be sure to get the Quaker store, it's looking pretty good right now. Joe
And remember folks...don't forget to add your name to your entry (otherwise, when you get moved to the archives you'll end up at the bottom. I know, there was no place for your name. I just added that 2/11/00.
Hey pppsm@netscape.nte, yes I remember the wooden nickles from Nate's! (see original entry by pppsm). Do you remember the town fairs at the baseball fields? I especially remember the big wooden barrel that the motorcycles use to ride in. You would go to the top and look down while they started at the bottom and eventually came up the sides to the top.....it was loud and exciting...I wonder if anyone else can remember that? I also remember the "Golden Point" hamburbuger place. My Dad would take us there after baseball games and after fishing at Kirkwood lake.....man this is all coming back to me now.....hope to hear from more people here.....Joe has done a great job......Thanks Joe!
Don't forget to visit the Guestbook Archives
Howdy Stratford, nice website. I used to live on Whitman Ave, right down from Friendly's Ice Cream. I lived there most of my life, then moved to Texas in 1983. I remember playing stickball, hockey and football in the streets with Maria and Michelle Ricciardelli,.. Steve and Violet Longmire,.. Linda and Scott Crossland,.. Tim Roedig,.. Johnny Feast, Mike Crane,.. Tom & Nicky Principato,.. Gary, Tracy, Lori & George Mayland,.. I remember sledding at Rexon's Hill until my fingers were frozen stiff,.. snowball fights that lasted well into the night,.. ahhh, the good life. Not to mention all those beers we drank in the woods,.. :) Anyway, I've been back a few times, the place sure has changed alot. When my wife and I were looking for a house to buy, I insisted on a close knit neighborhood like the one I grew up in. There was always someone to play with, something to do, and lots of good times. Later Stratford,.. Tim Casey
