In 1806 the White Horse Pike was laid out — "Beginning at a stake in the ‘Old Egg Harbor Road’, opposite White Horse Tavern, it ran partly thru the townships of Gloucester, Gloucester-Town and Newton to about the present location of Harleigh Cemetery in Camden.

• Below the White Horse Tavern the road had several names:

• from the Tavern to Berlin — Long-a-Coming Road

• Berlin to Waterford — Waterford Works Road

• below Waterford — Egg Harbor or Absecon Road

In 1857 its course between the Tavern and Berlin was altered to conform to the present line thru Laurel Springs.

The automobile necessitated a better road and the present White Horse Pike was dedicated on November 2, 1922 as the "longest stretch of hard-surface in the world". Just 33 short years ago! (78 years ago now)
