| From "Our Town"... In 1806 the White Horse Pike was laid out "Beginning at a stake in the Old Egg Harbor Road, opposite White Horse Tavern, it ran partly thru the townships of Gloucester, Gloucester-Town and Newton to about the present location of Harleigh Cemetery in Camden.
In 1857 its course between the Tavern and Berlin was altered to conform to the present line thru Laurel Springs. The automobile necessitated a better road and the present White Horse Pike was dedicated on November 2, 1922 as the "longest stretch of hard-surface in the world". Just 33 short years ago!
