Camden man charged with stabbing ex-girlfriend

August 19, 2004

Philadelphia Inquirer

A Camden man was arrested late Tuesday night on charges of stabbing his ex-girlfriend and a neighbor who heard her screams and came to her aid.
Both victims, whose names police did not release, suffered multiple stab wounds and were listed in critical but stable condition yesterday at Cooper University Hospital, authorities said.
Oshain Lambert, 29, of the 1300 block of Merrimac Road, was charged with two counts of attempted murder, making terroristic threats, burglary, endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest, and weapons offenses. Lambert is being held at the Camden County jail after failing to post $500,000 cash bail. His 18-year-old ex-girlfriend was holding the couple's infant daughter when Lambert began stabbing her, authorities said.
The baby was not injured.
Lambert went to his ex-girlfriend's home at the Woodmere Apartments on the White Horse Pike in Stratford around 11 p.m. Tuesday. He knocked on the door, entered the apartment, and began stabbing the woman, according to police. He stabbed the 24-year-old neighbor when he came to help. Lambert fled, but he was arrested in Laurel Springs by Stratford and Somerdale officers. Two knives and a machete were recovered from the crime scene, authorities said.

Diners can surf Internet at new Stratford eatery

At the month-old Burger King on the White Horse Pike, Eric Wynn discovered something faster than the fries.
"Wow, it's the Internet," he said, surveying a row of flat-screen monitors.
BK's cybercafe serves up free access to the Web, as well as wireless fidelity, commonly known as Wi-Fi.
"We wanted to offer our customers a special experience, something that sets us apart from other fast-food places," said Gregory R. Winans, vice president of U.S. Restaurants, the Blue Bell, Pa.-based franchiser of 38 Burger Kings in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The new format also includes comfy club seating and carpeted areas, more often found in quick-casual restaurants like Panera Bread.
"It's a softer environment, not a fast-food environment," Winans said.
U.S. Restaurants rolled out its cybercafe prototype in Blue Bell in 2000, the brainchild of CEO Steve Lewis. Stratford is the second restaurant to go online; Glassboro will follow later this year.
Winans said the program is the first of its kind in the Burger King organization and has the philosophical blessing of the corporation, although the company isn't contributing financially to the concept.
It's an idea whose time has come, he said.
"At the Blue Bell store, acceptance was slow," noted Winans, 42. "This one, from the day we opened, it took off - little kids, old ladies, everybody."
Today, sales at the Pennsylvania restaurant are 40 percent higher than at comparable Burger Kings that aren't online. It's too early to track sales on the Jersey side, but Winans notes sit-down traffic is 15 percent higher than in typical BKs, and salads are outpacing burgers.
In addition to independents, other chains are introducing the cybercafe. Starbucks already offers Wi-Fi at its stores in Cherry Hill, Haddonfield and Marlton, as does Borders in Marlton, Mays Landing and Mount Laurel.
McDonald's is rolling out the concept gradually, starting in metropolitan New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Seattle. The fast-food giant is considering payment methods ranging from coupons-with-purchase to a flat $3-per-hour fee.
In the Pennsylvania store, Burger King initially issued a ticket for Internet access with the purchase of a value meal.
"That was cumbersome," Winans recalled. "So we thought, why not give it away?"
Here, U.S. Restaurant retrofitted a Ponderosa restaurant, because its size - 6,500 square feet, compared to the typical BK's 3,500 square feet - would accommodate the computer stations. Its proximity to the PATCO Hi-Speedline also attracts commuters with laptops.
Online, patrons can surf the 'Net and send and receive e-mail. Filters were installed to block pornography, Winans said.
Sara Piscitelli, 14, of Gibbstown, stopped by for a Coke and to chat with friends via AOL's Instant Message system.
"I have a computer at home, but I think it's fun to come in here," she said.
Wynn, a 44-year-old medical transport technician from Camden, dipped French toast sticks in syrup as he surveyed the screen.
"I've almost got the hang of this," he said. "It's a lot more fun than just sitting and eating." Reach Eileen Smith at (856) 486-2444 or esmith@courierpostonline.com

Activities cut from Stratford school budget
Friday, June 4, 2004

By BERNIE MIXON

STRATFORD

Many extracurricular activities - including Honor Society and Peer Mediation - will end this school year after voters defeated the 2004-2005 Stratford School District budget.
The Stratford School Board also cut nonessential busing, a third-grade teacher, a Reading Recovery consultant and Yellin stage band, and will charge community groups to use school buildings on weekends.
After the budget defeat in April - the fourth year in a row - borough council set $150,000 as the amount to be cut from the budget, leaving it up to the school board to decide what cuts to make.
"We've never had anything like this," said Superintendent Albert K. Brown. "This is unprecedented. It really has everybody fired up in this town."
Terri Raphelson, who has two children in the district - one in third grade and the other in sixth - said parents were upset about the cut in activities.
"I think people think there are no rewards for the kids as far as striving for good grades and behavior," said Raphelson who also is PTO president.
"It affects you even if you are not into sports but you are into clubs," Raphelson said. "There are a lot of things on that list that are for everybody."
The Stratford school district has about 900 students in pre-kindergarten to eighth grade.
The district operates two schools Parkview School, which has pre-kindergarten to third grade, and Samuel S. Yellin School, which has fourth to eighth grade. Students in ninth through 12th attend Sterling High School.
In addition to the $150,000 in cuts ordered by borough council, the budget situation worsened when the district was hit with an additional $50,000 in unbudgeted student placement costs.
That meant the school board needed to come up with $205,500 in cuts from next year's school budget.
Among the items on the list of cuts include: boys basketball, girls basketball, field hockey, wrestling, softball and cheerleading.
The arts also suffer losses in areas such as instrumental band, chorus, the Yellin Stage Band, and Drama club.
Other cuts include Honor Society, school newspaper, student council, yearbook, chess club, Battle of the Books club and peer mediation.
Parents and educators alike say the loss of the extra-curricular activities will rob students of important experiences.
"The socialization of being part of a team and being part of a group effort is a positive and important experience for kids," Brown said. "It would be a real sad loss for our kids not to have those experiences without a doubt."
Some feel the cuts are a way for the district to capture the attention of parents.
"They chose to take the extracurricular programs away as a way to punish the parents," said Danielle Bailey, parent of two children in the district. "I can afford to supplement that, it's the kids whose parents can't afford it or don't have the time" who will suffer.
Mayor Tom Angelucci said borough council feels the school board can find $58,000 in cuts in other area's of the district's budget to save the activities.
"My opinion is these particular programs were cut to get exactly what they wanted. The problem is I want these kids in the eighth grade to have sports and honor society and all the things that they cut," Angelucci said.
There are no plans by borough council to revisit the amount of cuts the council required the school board to make, Angelucci said.
Meanwhile, Brown said efforts are under way to try to find a way to provide students with some sort of activities next year.
"One of the problems is we don't know where this is going to end," Brown said. "We are going to look at other ways to raise the money."
"We could do fund raising. We are looking at charging a student activity fee. We are trying to see how we can pare down the costs and run a basic program," he said.
As it stands now, the district is operating under the assumption that extracurricular activities will not be part of student life in the fall.
"There is a lot of shared blame here between the board of education, the school administration, the town council and the voters of Stratford," Brown said. "The only ones who are innocent are the kids."

Missing - hoops on the Basketball Courts
Missing - lines on Tennis Courts
Missing - lines on Basketball Courts
Missing - lines on Volleyball Courts

    We have - potholes
We have - bent volleyball posts (still wonder why we have volleyball courts on asphalt??)
We have - aggressive foliage (thorns, and trees) protruding from and overgrowing the  fence.
We have - lights that do not work (2).
We have - glass littered sport recreation courts.

And all this for almost five thousand dollars in taxes per year. (I know, I know, it doesn't all go to the boro)
UPDATE: Mayor Angelucci did, as he usually does, promptly respond to my email. It seems some (or most?) of the folks back in that area want only the playground equipment to stay (monkey bars, swings, etc?). This topic has been brought up at the past few Council Meetings with local residents in attendance, according to the Mayor. I must add that it is quite an asset having Mayor Angelucci's insight so readily available to the people of Stratford. He always replies to my email inquiries, no matter how off-the-wall. Finally, I would urge anyone with a question or a problem to email the appropriate town official and relay that problem to them. Email addresses for the various department heads can be found on the Official Boro site. Now, I just hope JK gets my email about the potholes at Stratford and Wellington before I lose my frontend.
UPDATE 02.23.04 Potholes have been fixed (next day). I'm impressed, that was QUICK! Thank you.

    LOGAN

Stratford man dies after disturbance in Logan
A Camden County sheriff's officer who shot himself after a weekend disturbance at a township hotel died Sunday morning, authorities said.
James P. McKeown, 60, of Stratford, died from a self-inflicted stomach wound at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, police said.
McKeown, a sheriff's officer for more than 16 years, got into an argument with a female about 11 p.m. Saturday at the Holiday Inn Select Bridgeport on Center Square Road in the Bridgeport section of the township, police said.
Officers responding to the disturbance call found McKeown in the hotel parking lot.
As they started to speak with him, McKeown pulled a handgun from his waistband and shot himself once in the stomach, police said.
Officers rushed to his attention and provided medical care until the Logan Township EMS arrived, police said.
A South Star helicopter airlifted McKeown to Cooper, where he died at 7:38 a.m. Sunday.
No other details about the incident were available Sunday
Neither Camden County Sheriff Michael W. McLaughlin nor other sheriff's department representatives could be reached for comment.
McKeown was in the news almost exactly one year ago.
He was working as a guard in Camden County Superior Court when he was knocked to the floor and kicked repeatedly by a defendant as he and other officers tried to handcuff him on Feb. 6, 2003.

  • Stratford police quickly nab bank robbery suspect
    November 19, 2003
    Philadelphia Inquirer

A Camden County bank robbery suspect was nabbed minutes after his heist yesterday when the taxi he hailed as a getaway vehicle became mired in traffic, police said.

A man entered the Commerce Bank branch on the White Horse Pike here shortly before 1:30 p.m. and approached a teller. Holding his hand under his sweater as if he had a gun, the man demanded cash. He ran away with an undetermined amount of loot toward the PATCO High Speed Line and jumped into a cab at the nearby taxi stand. Stratford police arrived soon after and a cabdriver at the stand told them he had seen the man getting into a taxi moments earlier, Stratford Police Chief Ron Morello said.

Police caught sight of the taxi when it got stuck in a traffic jam at Somerdale Road and the White Horse Pike. The robber, perhaps sensing police on his trail, jumped out of the moving cab at Park Avenue and ran behind a radiator shop. Sgt. Al Columbaro and Officer Robert Kelly caught up with him and placed him under arrest. The cash was recovered, and no one was injured, Morello said.

The suspect, Mark Warrington, 34, of Erial, was charged with armed robbery, making terroristic threats, and resisting arrest. He was being held last night on $100,000 bail at the Camden County Correctional Facility.

Seven area schools win statewide award
    Saturday, November 15, 2003

    By LAVINIA DeCASTRO
    Courier-Post Staff

Seven schools in South Jersey are among 25 in the state that have received the 2003 Governor's School of Excellence award.

"We're thrilled," said Carol Vita, principal of the Yellin School in Stratford. "This has been a total team effort."

The George Washington School in Camden, Bordentown Regional High School, Evergreen School in Woodbury, Harrison Township School as well as Joyce Kilmer and Thomas Paine International elementary schools in Cherry Hill also received the $25,000 award.

They were picked because they demonstrated significant improvement in academic achievement over at least two years as measured by standardized test scores or other criteria.

"We are pleased with the recognition of Washington school as a Governor's School of Excellence," said Bart Leff, spokesman for the Camden School District. "It shows that the Camden school district provides an effective education for children."

Each of the schools also demonstrated progress in at least five other categories, such as increased parent involvement, improved student attendance, and creative and increased community partnerships and use of technology.

The Yellin school, for instance, increased parental involvement by installing software that allows parents to check their children's grades online. Attendance at the Yellin School also went up after the school implemented a tougher attendance policy, Vita said.

Yellin School will likely use the money to buy a mobile computer lab with 25 to 30 terminals.
"That is on our wish list," Vita said.

The award is part of Gov. James E. McGreevey's education reform agenda and will be given for the first time this year.

A reception honoring recipients will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Drumthwacket, the governor's residence in Princeton.

Stratford residents form nonprofit to educate people about porphyria
    By ANGELA RUCKER

    AVI STEINHARDT/Courier-Post
Stratford residents Stephen Duff, who has the rare metabolic disorder porphyria, and his wife, Diana Brooks, formed the Cure Porphyria Organization, hoping to educate physicians about the disease, attract funding and spur research that aims to unravel the disease.
Having leafed through the medical practice's entire waiting room library of magazines, Stephen Duff and Diana Brooks set upon a better use of their time: composing, by hand, the documents needed to create a charitable nonprofit corporation.
New Jersey approved the application earlier this month for the Cure Porphyria Organization, and, with time and luck, that just may make the Stratford couple's waiting-room waits a thing of the past.
It's a milestone for the e-mail group Duff started three years ago from his home computer to connect with people who, like him, have porphyria, a rare metabolic disorder that has no cure.
"I'm glad to see it expand that much," Duff said earlier this week. "I think now that we're a formal nonprofit and once we receive the federal nonprofit designation, we'll be able to get the grants we need.
"Without the formal process, you can't get corporate donations, you don't qualify for grants."
Duff, his wife, and the more than 300 people from throughout the world who have signed on to his e-mail support group over the years are hoping that completing mountains of paperwork does more than give an official endorsement to their group and Web site, www.cureporphyria.org.
They want to educate physicians about the disease, attract funding and spur research that aims to unravel the disease, not simply manage the symptoms.
"Ultimately we would like to find a cure," says Duff, who is 51 and was diagnosed with porphyria in 1999.
Admittedly, starting a nonprofit group is not easy work. Duff lucked out when he married Brooks one year ago. She had grant-writing experience from a job with the federal government in Alaska.
James Fruscione, assistant director of the New Jersey Division of Revenue's Business Services branch, often will recommend do-it-yourselfers consider hiring an attorney or an accountant.
Once someone decides to form a nonprofit, there are the decisions about mission, structure, trustees. And that is only the beginning. There are gaggle of state and federal forms with number and letter designations to complete. Their Web sites (www.state.nj.us/treasury and www.irs.gov) offer guidance.
As onerous as the task is, however, Fruscione says: "It gives you credibility."
"We have thousands of people go through this. They do succeed. They do raise money," he said.
In New Jersey, the fees to file as a nonprofit start at $75.
A member of the Cure Porphyria Organization's e-mail list donated the cost in memory of a relative who died of the disease, said Brooks, who encourages others inspired to form a nonprofit to go for it.
"People who make money off of this make it seem like it's terribly difficult," she said. "You can do it yourself. It's not impossible."
There is at least one other national group devoted to porphyria, but Duff said he and many on his e-mail list were turned off by the annual fee to gain full access to the Web site. Duff, who retired much earlier than he had planned from his job as a chemical engineer, receives disability payments. Though he had no problems qualifying for assistance, he can cite several instances when others in the group did.
Porphyria is often misdiagnosed as anything from multiple sclerosis to lupus to a psychiatric disorder. In fact, it is a group that includes at least eight disorders.
What they have in common is this: an excess of porphyrins build up in the body. Normally cells convert porphyrins to heme, a compound that combines with the protein globin to form hemoglobin. It is essential to normal body functioning.
When that process goes awry, symptoms include abdominal pain, weakness, nausea, nerve damage, fatigue, seizures, depression, forgetfulness and painful, swollen skin.
The most unusual symptom is red urine, described on the American Liver Foundation's Web site as a "spectacular port wine color." And though it is rare, there are pronounced pockets of the disease in South Africa and Sweden, where a number of the organization's e-mailers live.
The only way most people have even heard of the disease is if they've seen The Madness of King George, a movie that showed efforts of multiple physicians to diagnose King George III's malady, which historians now know was porphyria.
Dr. Eric Deppert, Graduate Hospital's vice chairman of the Department of Medicine, is Duff's physician and a medical consultant for the organization. He said between five and 10 people in 100,000 have porphyria, but that it is often misdiagnosed.
"In clinical practice, I take care of about 10 patients with porphyria, and most doctors don't believe I have one because they've never seen one," he said.

Family vacations can be tolerable with a little help from a friend
    By KIMBERLY WEHRLE
    (Courier Post) Static Writer

The warm days of summer are upon us and teens,
as well as families, have planned out how they will
    spend their summer vacation.

To most teens, this is an exciting time, but to others,
it can mean a trip they would rather not take.
Spending a week with the family could make some teens long for a boring math class while others look forward to spending quality time with Mom and Dad even if it requires looking at the back of their heads for hours on end wondering aloud, "Are we there yet?"

Is it cool to go on vacation with your family, or is vacation only fun if it's with your friends?

    The answer may surprise you.

When asked which vacations were most enjoyable, the total numbers were very close.

In a recent survey of South Jersey teens ages 13 to 19, 55 percent agreed that vacationing with the family is not a big deal, while the other 45 percent said vacations with friends are much cooler.

"Vacations were originally intended for families, and they should be spent building family memories whether they be good, bad or painfully annoying," said Elizabeth Licorish, a junior at Paul VI High School.

Others said that going with your friends is a lot better than spending your free summer days with family members. Most agreed that you can be yourself and not have to worry about doing things that only your parents want to do.

"I would rather go with my friends," said Steve Sefchick, a junior at Sterling High School. "You are more likely to do something that's fun. Friends definitely know how to have a good time."

Yet, some teens claim that taking a trip, regardless of who it is with, can be fun, depending on the vacation destination.

If you vacation with friends, the activities may be more enjoyable, but you will probably have to pay for the time you are away. Going with your family may leave you with some boring activities, but more money in your pocket for future spending.

One easy way to solve the problem when going on a family vacation is to nicely ask your parents if you can bring a friend along.
This way, you will have both relatives and a good friend to spend your time with.

If your parents decide to plan the day doing something that you and your pal are not interested in, ask if you can join them for some of the day, and then go off and do your own thing afterward.

Whether you're vacationing this summer with family or friends, make the most of your trip, because before you know it, you will be heading back to school.

Stress of war takes toll on soldiers, kin
    Monday, July 21, 2003
    By RICHARD PEARSALL
    Courier-Post Staff
Some relatives watch the news from Iraq compulsively, drawn by a need to know their loved one is OK, if only for another day.
Others find it too painful to be reminded that another American soldier has been killed in what has come to seem like a daily event.
Some believe the war was justified; others that it was a mistake.
Some want to know precisely when their son or daughter is coming home; others fear that would only add to their already excruciating anxiety.
But all of the half-dozen South Jersey parents interviewed for this article agreed on one thing: This phase of the war is more difficult to cope with than the one that preceded it.
    ...
Lynn Parker of Stratford hasn't seen her husband in five months and won't for at least seven more. That is, unless the military higher-ups decide to keep his National Guard unit in Kuwait for another year, a distinct possibility.
Parker, who talks to her husband, Spc. Robert Parker, by text messaging three times a week and once a month by phone for 15 minutes, is more worried about him now than she was during the actual war.
His company enters southern Iraq on missions every day.
"When a car pulls up outside, I wake up and just wait for the knock on the door," Lynn Parker said. "That's the fear. . . . It's every day, every minute."
Lynn Parker said recently her husband's morale has gone down.
"It's not the fear, I just think it's the depression," Parker said. "The whole thing is starting to wear on them. They've already been there five months and they know it's still going to be at least seven months until they get home."
Parker said her husband had asked to come home when their youngest son William, 2, who is terminally ill, was in the hospital. But the Army hasn't allowed it, she said.

Highest bidder plans senior housing for Stratford School
    By DANIEL WALSH
    Courier-Post Staff
    STRATFORD
Friday, June 20, 2003 - A Haddonfield builder wants to transform the Stratford School into senior housing while maintaining the 1921 school's architecture.
Franklin Clapp placed the high bid of $250,000 during the Stratford Board of Education's auction of the Princeton Avenue school Thursday. The school board meets Tuesday to decide whether to accept the bid and sell the building, which residents called the Princeton School.
"The inside of that place is just gorgeous," Clapp said Thursday. "You've still got the old chestnut trim. You've got the ceilings that are 15 to 20 feet high."
Clapp's initial proposal calls for transforming the school's interior into about eight condominiums. He would maintain the building's facade and probably the baseball field next to the school.
"We have a lot of people, including myself, who want to save the architecture," Mayor Tom Angelucci said. "These two high bidders sound like they want to save the architecture."
Clapp and South Jersey developer Daniel Vecchio submitted the two high bids. Vecchio proposed renovating the school for office space.
"I think people will be pleased about what this will be for," school Superintendent Al Brown said. "It's a ratable, it'll pay taxes and preserve the building."
Local residents had been concerned the school district would sell the building for too low a price to a developer who would then demolish the school. Many believed the auction wasn't well advertised, and borough officials asked Brown last week to delay the auction. Brown refused.
Clapp entered the picture almost literally at the last minute. He met with Borough Administrator John Keenan before Thursday's 11 a.m. auction, drove over to look at the school, and arrived at the auction just in time to bid before even inspecting the school.
His plans give some hope to opponents of the school's sale. Julie Galezniak, the treasurer of Stratford's historic commission, is still nervous about the school's fate.
"I really was hoping we could've kept (the school) within the town, but the school board wouldn't cooperate," Galezniak said.
Virginia Colangelo of Delran grew up on Vassar Avenue and was one of seven Fitzpatrick siblings to attend the Princeton School. She said she was sad the building was being sold but hoped its buyer would maintain the structure.
"If I can just ride by it and show my children," Colangelo said. "This is the person I became because of this school."
Colangelo, 53, can still describe the school from top to bottom and recalls learning to read there while in the first grade in 1957.
"I still have a `Dick, Jane and Sally' book from that school," Colangelo said. "They taught us to read from that book."
If the school board votes Tuesday to sell the building, it must sell it to Clapp, the highest bidder, Brown said. Clapp would pay 10 percent up front and have 60 days to close a deal, Brown said.

    Groups bid to save schoolhouse
    Wednesday, June 18, 2003

    MICHAEL SCHWARTZ/Courier-Post
Residents and the Stratford Historical Preservation Commission hope to save the Stratford School. Built in 1921, it has been empty since a ceiling collapsed three years ago. A church suggests turning it into a community center.
    By DANIEL WALSH
    Courier-Post Staff
    STRATFORD

The signs on the White Horse Pike say "Welcome to Historic Stratford."

But school officials on Thursday plan to auction off one of the town's two remaining nonresidential structures of historic significance - the Stratford School on Princeton Avenue.

A movement is under way to stop the sale of the building, built in 1921.

United Methodist Church wants to transform the building into a community center, while local historians and members of borough council want to save what little remains of the borough's history.

"You can't really put a price tag on the value this could lend to our kids and residents," said Julie Galezniak, treasurer of Stratford's historical commission. "Without an appreciation of our past, we lose track of where things will go in the future."
Several generations of Stratford children attended the grammar school before the board of education moved most classes to other facilities.

The school board kept its offices on the first floor and an alternative school operated on the second floor until three years ago.
That's when a drop ceiling caved in during a thunderstorm, prompting school officials to close the building, Borough Administrator John Keenan said.

The structure still retains signs of life. Air conditioners remain in windows.
And a flier posted in the window of the front door advertises for teaching assistants - with an application deadline of June 23, 2000.

After the drop ceiling fell, school officials estimated building renovations would cost $1 million. That price tag, which included installing an elevator, proved way off the mark, Keenan said. The only real problem was a "shoddy renovation" done more than 10 years ago when the drop ceilings were installed, Keenan said.

"They scared us with a high figure," Keenan said. "The roof is fine. The windows are fine. The bricks are fine, though someone did a second coat of mortar, and they did a shoddy job. Margaret (Westfield) said it was the best shape of any school she'd seen." Westfield is a Haddon Heights architect whose niche is historic buildings.

"It definitely could be rehabilitated, and it definitely has historic value," Westfield said. "I remember feeling very enthusiastic about the building and its potential. Generations have gone to school there, and it's a landmark on the street," Westfield added. "It's a shame it could be sold and demolished."

School Superintendent Al Brown and Business Administrator Denise DiGiandomenico did not return phone calls seeking comment. School officials originally had been willing to give the structure to the borough government. But the borough's historical commission was tied up with the restoration of the nearby Quaker Store, the other remaining historically significant nonresidential structure in town. The borough also had just bought three new land tracts and was building a firehouse.

"We couldn't find any outside organization to take (the school) and run with it," Keenan said. "Of course, we didn't want to be the ones to take the wrecking ball to it. So we gave it back to the school board, not knowing what to do with it."

Two months later, the Rev. Terrie Prescott of United Methodist Church approached borough officials about transforming the building into a community center. Prescott later met with school officials but didn't have the funding at the time.
She now hopes to seek grants for the community center project. Although the Stratford School is the "perfect" site, Prescott hopes to build one regardless of what happens to the building.

Galezniak insists grants are available to pay for the school's renovation.

"The New Jersey Historic Preservation Trust is highlighting old schools now," Galezniak said. "Many communities are doing the same thing."
One of those communities is Collingswood, where the downtown Zane School on Haddon Avenue was restored as an office building in 2000. The $1.8 million price tag was far higher than what's been estimated for the Stratford School.

Walt Baxter, president of Stratford's historical commission, said historic areas are proven to have higher values.

"For some reason, people are looking at this as a burden instead of a positive," Baxter said. "Collingswood turned their school into a great situation."

Stratford's borough council threw its support behind saving the school, even asking school officials to delay the auction.
But Brown, Stratford's superintendent, responded Friday with a letter saying the auction would go on as scheduled.
The starting bid will be $150,000. The school board doesn't meet again until Tuesday, at which time it could decide whether to accept a bid.

Galezniak and Baxter are concerned Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Stratford may buy the property, which would make it tax-exempt.

More than anything, they don't want to lose another symbol of Stratford's history.

Baxter tells the story of how the old White Horse Tavern once sat just a few blocks away off the White Horse Pike.
Built in 1740, the tavern was where Camden County actually was formed, Baxter said.

In 1964, a local mayor sought President Lyndon Johnson's help to secure funding to restore the building and create a park around it.

    He didn't get it.

A shopping center now sits where the tavern once did.

    Karen Milideo: National Scholarship Winner
    From the Principal's Newsletter ( http://www.sterling.k12.nj.us/Principal/PNL-05-14.htm )
On March 18, Sterling High School was notified that senior, Karen Milideo has been awarded the GalaxoSmith Kline National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation issued a Nation-wide press release on April 16 announcing Karen and approximately 8,000 other winners. The award process starts with every student who takes the PSAT Exam in the entire country and ends with the awarding of these prestigious scholarships to the very best of the best. One of whom is Karen.
We have been researching Sterling’s records to find if there have been any other students who have won this award during the course of our forty-year history. So far, Karen is the only one. What an honor for her parents, teachers and Sterling High School.
A member of the Class of 2003, Karen is completing four years of distinguished accomplishments. She has been a member of both the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language Honor Society since eleventh grade. She participated on the Academic Challenge Team in the eleventh and twelfth grades. She received the Camden County High School Music Award for each of the last four years and an Honorable Mention Award at the 2001 Inter-district Art Show. Karen was also named a Sterling Student of the Month for April 2003.
Karen has participated in the whole gamut of instrumental music activities available at Sterling High School. She has participated in the Marching Band, Concert Band and Orchestra for four years. She was named to the All Colonial Conference Band in tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. She has played in the Jazz Band in eleventh and twelfth grades and the Woodwind Ensemble in twelfth grade.
Karen acted in the Fall Drama and played in the Spring Musical Ensemble in the eleventh and twelfth grades. She has participated in the Clay/Ceramics Club for four years. She has also run Track in both her junior and senior years.

Teacher's lessons live after his death
    Sunday, May 4, 2003
    By JASON NARK
    Courier-Post Staff
    SOMERDALE

Dave LaGrange began teaching his most valuable lessons when he left his classroom last spring.
A science teacher and football coach at Sterling High School, LaGrange died at home in Glassboro on April 19 - succumbing to a year-long fight against leukemia. He was 30.
He left behind a wife, Suzanne; his 4-year-old daughter, Corrine; and hundreds of students and colleagues who passed through his life.
The year away from work before his death allowed LaGrange to spend a lot of time with his young daughter. Before he passed away, he wrote birthday and wedding cards for Corrine to read as she grows - all wishing her his best and offering his love.
"She's all he talked about. He adored her," said 18-year-old Jenna Simone, a Sterling senior who took LaGrange's Global Science class as a sophomore. "I think the family tried to explain it to her as best they could."
LaGrange was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in January 2002 and left his post at the school later that spring. After a stem cell transplant, his disease progressed to a rare form of leukemia. He continued chemotherapy, but to no avail.
    Dave's lesson
According to Sterling Vice Principal Reno Domenico, LaGrange's death has profoundly affected students and faculty alike.
"There's an emptiness in the school. A feeling of emptiness since he's been gone," Domenico said. "Everybody knew of his struggle."
How the students responded to LaGrange's illness is extraordinary, Domenico said.
While LaGrange grappled with his disease at home, his students and players rallied behind him, learning and maturing all the way.
Last year, the school raised more than $10,000 for LaGrange and his family through a five-kilometer run - the Run for Life.
Students expect more participants for the second annual race on May 18.
Besides the 5K run, students are planning a memorial in the school's courtyard and have contributed to a scholarship fund for LaGrange's daughter.
Senior Stephanie Okeson, in her eulogy for LaGrange titled "My Hero," quoted writer Henry Brook Adams:
A teacher affects eternity. He can never tell where his influence stops.
Domenico had been concerned when LaGrange died over spring break, thinking students might be lost without the structure of school to support them.
    He was wrong.
"I have never been more proud of a group of students than I have been in the last week," he said, perched on a desk in LaGrange's science lab.
Many of the students were together during the week, finding solace in their memories of LaGrange. Everlasting memories
Okeson relayed a moment that stuck with her - when LaGrange happened upon her in the library studying. He stayed with her for hours and "refused to leave until I could correctly label the layers of the ocean floor," she said.
Students and former players described LaGrange as tough but fair, perhaps a little tougher on the field.
"From the classroom to the field - he was all business," said 17-year-old J.P. Larmore.
As his freshmen rose to the ranks of varsity football, LaGrange followed them, even when his sickness made it difficult.
"He would write us letters before games," said 18-year-old Harold Barton, sitting in LaGrange's powder-blue science lab.
"If he couldn't make it to the game, he would analyze the tapes from home," said senior Ken Parker.
Many students thought LaGrange's mental and physical toughness - he was a standout football player at Glassboro State College - would have carried him through his illness. But it was not to be.
"He was tough and fun at the same time," said Ivan Wiggins, a senior who is president of the student council. "If I had to pick one person in this school I thought this would happen to, it never would have been him.
"We figured if anyone would have made it through it would have been him."

Here are excerpts from a letter sent by Dave LaGrange to his students, two days before his death:
For myself, my disease is progressing as my doctors had predicted. I have already received the best and most advanced chemo drugs and my cancer has become resistant to all of them. My doctors are putting me on some oral form of chemotherapy w/the hope I can do it (at) home, and not have to in the hospital every other week. . . .
My wife and I have come to terms that this may not end the way we had hoped and have started to make plans for the worst scenario. I still have a positive attitude. My intention is to fight for as long as I can and hope the "Big Guy" delivers it on time. I also would ask continued prayers for my family - the mental and emotional strain on them is great, and hopefully your prayers and intercessions will be received and answered. I hope to make it up for a visit to Sterling after spring break.
I hope you all have a great Easter and spring break.
    Take care,
    Dave

Stratford police seek help in finding man’s attackers
    Sunday, February 9, 2003
    from the Courier Post
STRATFORD Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying five people who attacked a motorist with a tire iron Friday in the first block of Harvard Ave near Atlantic Avenue.
The 40-year-old borough man was apparently the victim of road rage, borough police said.
He suffered head and other injuries and was listed in guarded condition Saturday in an area hospital, police said. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
The victim was approached about 2 p.m. by the driver of a green, four door Ford Explorer, who assaulted him with a tire iron, police said. Two other men, who were passengers in the Explorer, began to kick and punch the victim as he lay on the ground.
During the assault, a red pickup truck stopped by and two men from that vehicle joined in the attack. The attackers later left in their vehicles.
Police said the driver of the Ford Explorer was described as a white male, about 20 years old. He was about 6 feet tall and had sandy blond hair. His two passengers were described as black males about 6 feet tall and also about 18 to 20 years old. The occupants of the pickup truck were described as Hispanic, with thin builds, also about 18 to 20 years old.

Man falls to death at Stratford store

The body of an apparent burglar is covered by a sheet at Rite Aid in Stratford on Wednesday as police investigate
A man who police said attempted to break through the roof of the Rite Aid Pharmacy overnight Tuesday, apparently slipped and fell to his death.
Police were attempting to identify the man from fingerprint files. He is believed to be about 45 years old.
Police said an employee arriving at the store at Warwick Road and Longwood Drive about 8:05 a.m. found the body near the drive-through area of the pharmacy.
The man had used a ladder and storage crates to scale the drive-through wall and roof, authorities said. Pry marks also were found on the roof. Police believe he lost his balance and slid down the steel-covered roof, landing on the sidewalk 14 feet below. He suffered severe head trauma, police said.
The man had a cordless hand drill, drill bits, screw drivers, gloves and a ski hat when he was found.
The store in the Laurel Mill Shopping Center had closed at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Todd Reichard, owner of Reichard's Stratford Mobil across the street, said police and customers asked him questions for much of the morning.
``From what I gathered, someone was up on the roof and apparently didn't negotiate the descent,'' said Reichard while working on a pickup truck.
Reichard said police asked him if he saw suspicious cars in the lot or a ladder.
``I caught wind of it around 8:30 a.m., but I didn't see anything. I don't even know if it was a male or female,'' he said. ``One customer of ours said he saw the body and that there was blood.''
Several police cars and a ladder truck were at the store in the morning, he said.
Jody Cook, a Rite Aid spokeswoman, said the company was cooperating with police. The Stratford store opened in 1997 and is one of 175 in New Jersey, Cook said.

    Quaker Store being restored
    By DANIEL WALSH
    Courier-Post Staff

    AL SCHELL/Courier-Post
Local resident Walter Baxter was part of a crew that recently installed a furnace for free in the old Quaker Store (above), which dates back to 1840.
The old Quaker Store doesn't look remarkable yet. But wait just a bit.
Someday soon, restoration efforts of the 160-year-old building on the White Horse Pike may result in a little bit of South Jersey history coming back to life.
Perhaps you'll walk in the front door and see an old candy counter to the left, where each piece cost just a penny. Or maybe you'll turn to the right where the ice cream bin used to be. Straight ahead, the original meat counter will be just like it was 70 years ago.
And out in front, in clear, bold letters, there'll be a vintage Quaker Store sign on this building, the last of the grocery store chain to close its doors about 15 years ago.
For now, the wait is on, but there's finally something tangible to see. Local preservationists have already installed a new cedar shake roof. Carpenters from Collingswood Hardware are installing vintage 1850s double- hung wood windows and restoring the building's second floor.
Some local visionaries have a vision of the past that might be realized once again. They're saving a historic building that nearly ended up on a demolition pile four years ago.
"All of us, we just had good memories of coming here, and we just thought it would be a shame to lose it," said Julie Galezniak, a member of the Stratford Historical Society who grew up in nearby Somerdale and helped spearhead the preservation movement.
Galezniak can recall riding her bicycle down the White Horse Pike in the 1960s to buy candy for a penny and "those little sandwiches" the late Elizabeth Strippoli used to make there. Images like that clearly bring her back to those days, for as she remembers, a placid gaze and a girlish smile slip over her face.
"I think the past can direct us to the future," Galezniak said. "Perhaps it will give (town leaders) a clear vision of where to go in the future."
The vision isn't just hers though. Numerous Stratford residents took part in protests that led Exxon, which has a gas station next to the store, to nix demolition plans and leave the building in preservationists' hands for $1 a year.
Those numerous hands have also pitched in on restoration work. For example, Galezniak's husband, John, Walter Baxter, and Joe Gazzara recently installed a furnace for free.
Several fund-raisers have netted $13,000, and a Camden County grant put $98,000 in the coffers. The money will go toward restoring a building that dates back to 1740, when the original village of White Horse was settled.
The Quaker Store's foundation was laid around 1740, but the fate of the original building there isn't completely known. Baxter said part of the structure was attached to the White Horse Tavern, which was torn down in the 1960s. The Quaker Store was placed upon the foundation around 1840.
It's not clear exactly when the Quaker Store began operations, but it was in operation in the late 19th century and closed in the 1980s. Elizabeth Strippoli, the last store owner, lived above the store until her death in 1997.
Walk around the store today and remnants of that history can be seen. The original shelves are still up. On one shelf, there's a stack of old newspapers. An edition of the Courier-Post sits on top. A large photo of President Kennedy and his wife adorns the front page. The caption indicates Jackie Kennedy is addressing a Houston group in Spanish. She is smiling. The photo, like the store within which it sits, is quite innocent.
The newspaper's date is Nov. 22, 1963, the day President Kennedy was assassinated.

    Philadelphia Inquirer - Monday, October 21, 2002
A labor of love for Stratford:
Saving its last icon on White Horse Pike

    Inquirer Staff Writer
    Photo from boro site
For 140 years, the white clapboard building on the White Horse Pike has been the eye in a storm of change.
Buildings around it disappeared one by one. Gone is the White Horse Tavern. Gone the blacksmith shop, the wheelwright shop, and nine original houses that made up the tiny village of White Horse.
In their place is an Exxon gas station, a Pep Boys auto-repair shop, a PNC Bank - and traffic, lots of traffic along the pike.
But the old general store, better known in recent decades as the Quaker Store, survived. And with help from Stratford residents, borough officials, Exxon, and a Camden County grant, it is being lovingly restored to its 19th-century appearance.
"This is the last link to the past - the remaining icon of White Horse - and we can't lose it," said Julie Galezniak, treasurer of the Stratford Historic Preservation Commission. "We've been working to preserve what's left."
A $26,000 cedar-shingle roof was put on in the summer, a new heating system is being installed, period windows will be replaced, and a back wall will be repaired, Galezniak said. The borough hopes to restore the distinctive two-story porch by next summer.
In the end, the store that once provided the necessities to travelers taking stagecoaches or trains between the Philadelphia area and the Jersey Shore may still seem forlorn, a refugee from another time. But it will survive, borough residents and officials said.
"We've been talking about using it as a history center of the White Horse Pike," Galezniak said. "It can be used as a community center where small Stratford groups can hold meetings. It can be our cultural center where we can have art shows and quilt shows."
Walt Baxter, president of the preservation commission, said the borough must hold on to its past for future generations.
"Our area is so different from the way it was," he said. "It was a country town. The kids can come to the Quaker Store and learn."
For John Gentless, warm memories from his youth come flooding back every time he opens the door of the Quaker Store.
He remembers seeing the gracious storekeeper, Elizabeth Strippoli, who often ran tabs for local families until the store closed in the 1980s.
"The first thing you saw when you walked through the door was a big Coca-Cola cooler," said Gentless, a podiatrist and a member of the Borough Council and preservation commission. "The best thing was watching her get the cereal off the top shelf.
"She couldn't reach up to grab it and didn't have a ladder, so she had this wooden grabber, and she would bring it to the edge of the shelf, let it drop and catch it. She was a very, very hardworking lady - and very pleasant."
Galezniak, who also recalled childhood visits to the store, pointed out the shelves once stocked with food and a long groove worn in the wooden floor where Strippoli once walked behind a counter. The floor dipped lower behind the spot where she had kept the cash register.
"I used to ride my bike up here," Galezniak said as she looked around at the store, where photos on walls and in albums are all that's left of White Horse. "The penny candy was all on these counters here."
Strippoli lived above the store and was in the building from the 1940s into the 1990s. But the store began much further back in time.
When stagecoach service between Camden and Atlantic City began in 1773, the White Horse Inn became a regular stopover on the journey.
The Quaker Store building probably dates to about 1860 and served visitors who saw Kirkwood Lake about a half-mile away as a resort. The area took on the name Stratford, after Stratford-on-Avon, in 1889 and continued to attract visitors.
The general store was purchased in 1910 by George Cathrull and turned into a seafood restaurant and ice cream parlor. In 1925, the community was incorporated as Stratford. And shortly before World War II, the Cathrulls sold the building to the Strippoli family, who opened the Quaker Store.
When Strippoli died in 1997, her daughter-in-law, Maryann Strippoli, inherited the property, becoming a shareholder in Mason Holdings Inc., which owned the land on which the Quaker Store sits and the neighboring lot that has been leased to Exxon.
Exxon wanted to demolish the building and erect a sign with its name at the site until residents began picketing. The corporation agreed to sublease the building to the borough for $1 a year, and restoration has been under way since then, Galezniak said. Instead of "Exxon," the sign in front of the building reads "Historic Stratford."
The Quaker Store "is a throwback to past days," said Paul Schopp, historian of the Camden County Historical Society. Restoring it "is a way for people to remember," he said.
"If it serves as a rallying cry of historic preservation and local history, I think that's great."
Note: The Historic Preservation Commission meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7:30 P.M. at the Quaker Store.

Repeat drunk driver accused of fleeing
    Courier Post Staff

A man guilty of 19 prior drunken driving offenses tried to escape police attempting to serve him warrants, authorities said.
Patrolman John Beasley found John Toole, 54, in the front yard of the man's Sleepy Hollow Road home about 4 p. m. Saturday, police said. Toole fled into the house, police said.
Beasley, along with Patrolman Robert Kelly, searched the home and found Toole hiding in an upstairs bathroom, police said.
The officers also arrested Toole's brother Dennis P. Toole, 51, for helping his brother hide, they said.
Toole was arrested on outstanding warrants for unpaid fines for DWI and driving with a suspended license, as well as a warrant for failure to appeal in court for harassment charges.
Police also charged him with resisting arrest and bail jumping. He was taken to the Camden County Jail in lieu of $ 5,894 bail.
Dennis P. Toole was charged with hindering apprehension. His hearing will be Oct. 23.

No place like home for DWI suspect's latest arrest

    Inquirer Suburban Staff

This time, police say, John J. Toole led them on a chase through a house before they caught him.
Usually it's on the road. And they usually find him in his car.
But Stratford police said Toole, who has been convicted of 19 drunken-driving offenses, was in the bathroom this time.
"That's a new one," said Ronald M. Morello, chief of police in this Camden County borough.
Toole, 54, was collared Saturday on warrants for numerous charges, including driving while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license, failure to pay fines, and two criminal harassment charges.
The DWI dated to 1994. The harassment charges, which stemmed from domestic disputes reported to Mount Laurel police, were from 1994 and 1995, and the fines were from as far back as 1998, Morello said.
Toole, who Morello said is not employed, is something of a legend in these parts.
"He's back in, but he'll be out again," the chief said wearily. "These warrants continue to surface."
Thanks to Toole's driving past - he owes New Jersey $88,000 for drunken-driving offenses - his license is suspended for decades. He has said he still drives in Pennsylvania.
Generally, police said, Toole lies low during the day, then conducts any outside business when most people sleep.
"He's nocturnal," Morello said. "He's out in the middle of the night or not at all."
But Toole made a rare daytime appearance Saturday, and officers on patrol spotted him outside the Sleepy Hollow Road house where he lives with his brother.
Officer John Beasley made a beeline for Toole, who police said ran first into his backyard, then into the home. Beasley followed, chasing him upstairs before Toole slammed a bathroom door.
Morello described the capture this way:
"The officer tries to open the door. Mr. Toole is trying to hold the door closed. They wrestle with the door. Finally the officer gets him, and they arrest him."
In addition to the warrants, Toole was charged with one count of resisting arrest and bail jumping. He was being held yesterday in the Camden County Correctional Facility after failing to post $5,894 bail.
Also arrested was Dennis P. Toole, 51, who was charged with hindering the arrest of his brother.
Morello said Dennis Toole had fibbed about the identity of the man who stormed into his house the moment a police uniform came in sight.
"He said, 'That wasn't him. That was the neighbor who ran in my house,' " Morello said.
Dennis Toole was released on a summons and is scheduled to appear in municipal court tomorrow.
He could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Stratford’s most notorious driver disappeared from its Police Department’s radar screen for a few years while he was in state prison on drunken-driving charges.
He did show up briefly two years ago when he escaped from prison and returned to Stratford, but “we got him going into a taxicab one night,” Morello said. “It’s a vicious circle with him.”

Merlino, who claims to leg-press 1,100 pounds, has owned the center for two years. In that time, she has built up her clientele to 1,200 members and employs 32 people. One of the challenging aspects of her work as a personal trainer is helping those with health and physical problems reach their fitness goals.
She said she's seen a number of results from her personal training that have made a huge difference in her clients' lives. One client has osteoporosis that caused her back pain. After working with Merlino for three months, she went from below average bone density to above average, said Merlino.
But the real benefit was seen when the client was involved in a serious car accident. Although she hit a pole, she only broke part of her kneecap and elbow.
"Her doctor said her bones had become so strong that the weight resistance training saved her life," said Merlino.
In addition to running the gym, Merlino also teaches health and science courses at Camden County College in Blackwood. She developed both a weight-loss program and her own eight-week course designed to train people to become personal trainers in her gym. Merlino holds a bachelor of arts degree in science and health and is working toward a graduate degree from Rowan University. She is also writing two books on fitness.
According to Kathie Davis, executive director for IDEA Health & Fitness Association, the field of fitness instructors and personal trainers is a growing one.
"Group instruction and personal training are both growing fields. Group fitness had its roots in the 1970s. The difference now is it has expanded to include things such as indoor cycling and kick boxing," said Davis. "Personal training had its beginnings in the 1990s and came on strong. It became so popular because people really need that personal training and motivation that a personal trainer can provide."
For Merlino, her career is a labor of love.
"It's important for women to recognize it's a lifetime commitment to keep their bodies and minds healthy," she said.

Gregory promoted to `C-P' circulation director
    Courier-Post
    October 1, 2002
    jimgregory.jpg (12845 bytes)
Jim Gregory, the Courier-Post's circulation manager for 10 years, has been named circulation director.
He replaces Roger Keegan, who has accepted a position at USA Today, which, like the Courier-Post, is a Gannett newspaper.
"This appointment recognizes Jim's hard work, dedication and commitment to the Courier-Post," said Mark J. Frisby, the paper's president and publisher. "Jim has 20 years' experience in circulation at this newspaper and is the perfect choice to lead this circulation department into the future. Jim's `can do' attitude will certainly help him succeed in his new position."
Gregory, 41, of Stratford, started his career at the paper as a district manager, advancing to zone manager, home delivery manager and circulation manager.
He said his priorities include keeping the newspaper's pledge to have the paper on subscribers' doorsteps before 6 a.m. and "to keep customer service alive and kicking."
A customer service improvement on the horizon is expansion of the role of courierpostonline.com, the paper's Web site, in subscription issues, Gregory said.
"By the end of the year, you will be able to subscribe online, pay your bill online, order back issues online and stop and start your subscription around vacations online," he said.

Brook is Sterling's coach on field
    By WALT BURROWS
    Courier-Post Staff
Sterling High School's Blayne Brook, who plays on both the offensive and defensive lines, will do whatever it takes to help his team win. CARLOS J. ORTIZ/Courier-Post
    CARLOS J. ORTIZ/Courier-Post
Sterling High School's Blayne Brook, who plays on both the offensive and defensive lines, will do whatever it takes to help his team win.

The only thing Sterling High School coach Todd Green isn' t sure about two-way tackle Blayne Brook is his height.
``Blayne says he's 6-foot-3 and I say he's 6-2,'' said Green, introducing Brook earlier this week at the first meeting of the Brooks-Irvine Memorial Football Club. `'What I do know about him is that he's a model offensive and defensive lineman.
``He loves talking to the coaches, letting us know what' s going on out on the field. That's always a big plus, having a player with smarts enough to read the situations and make suggestions.
``Brook is a very dedicated kid with a great work ethic in the offseason. He helped our young players tremendously in preparing for the season, working in the weight room.''
Brook was All-Colonial Conference and All-Group 2 first team last year and is considered a solid Division I-AA prospect with a 3.2 grade-point average and 1,140 on his SATs.
``I'm not sure where I'll attend college yet, or what I might pursue for a career,'' Brook said.
Sterling opened with a 12-0 victory over a spunky Gateway team last Friday and plays at Audubon in a noon game Saturday. Prior to the game, the Green Wave will name its football field the Bendorf-Narducci Memorial Field.
Expectations are high at Sterling this fall and the narrow victory against Gateway was a little disappointing, according to Brook.
``We didn't play up to our expectations,'' Brook said. `` We played down to them. I thought Gateway played very well defensively. It wasn't anything like last year's game when we scored 50 points in the first half.
``I hope it was a wake-up game for us. We have some big games ahead and we'll need to play better if we want to contend for the championship.''
Green is contemplating moving Brook to tight end to utilize his blocking on Sterling's sweeps.
``Blayne has good agility and is quick off the ball,'' the coach said. ``Anytime we are facing a third-and-1 situation, we run behind him.''
Brook likes it that way, preferring to play offense over defense in the Silver Knights' Wing T.
``I've never had any difficulty blocking people,'' Brook said. ``I'm just beginning to feel comfortable on defense.
``The players take a lot of pride in our defense. Mike Smith is the other tackle, and Craig Johnson and Zakee Cook are the ends in our four-man front. Defense has been big in our success. I still prefer offense, but it's fun playing any position in helping us win.''
Brook never played organized football until his freshman year. He was a member of the special teams as a sophomore, then began his tour as a two-way tackle during his junior year.
While Green loves to talk about his 260-pound senior, the coach also believes Sterling has the horses to do well.
``This is a new position for us, playing as a favorite,'' Green said. ``We can run and pass but keeping the emotional side in order - making sure the heads fit into the helmets at the end of the day - is always a concern.
``Having 18 of the starting 22 back from last year can make that part of the job a bit difficult, but with a player like Blayne Brook on the field we don't lack for senior leadership and commitment.''
    And it doesn't matter whether he's 6-2 or 6-3.

Goodwill opens new store in Stratford
    By EILEEN SMITH
    Courier-Post Staff
    May 31, 2002
It's opening day at the Goodwill Store and there are so many shoppers you'd think they were giving away the merchandise.
According to Jane Cavanaugh, they practically are.
"I came looking for brand names for my boys," said the Swedesboro mother of three. "Just look what I got."
Cavanaugh held up a Ralph Lauren Polo T-shirt, priced at $3.49, and Polo pull-on pants, also $3.49. Her cart contained a slip priced at $4.99, two boxes of incense for $ 1 each and a joke book for $1.
"Shopping at Goodwill is always an adventure," she said.
Bargain hunting and improved marketing are elevating Goodwill to cult shopping status. When the new store - the area's 12th and largest - opened at 9 a.m. Thursday, nearly 100 customers were lined up outside.
"Anybody who likes a garage sale likes us," said Michael Shaw, vice president of retail operations. "And the younger generation views Goodwill as a cool place to shop."
The most popular items are lightly used blue jeans, priced at $6.99. But Goodwill is adding new wares to its mix, buying closeout goods from Target stores and dealing direct with mattress manufacturers.
A random sampling from throughout the store: An Ann Taylor denim jumper, $4.99; a Melitta cappuccino maker, $25; a three-piece set of matched, unused luggage, $50.
Audrey Norman of Somerdale has been shopping at Goodwill stores for years, although she could afford to buy just about anywhere. She thinks the best buys are women's pant suits, priced at $12.99.
"Everywhere I go, I shop thrift," she said. "If I go on vacation in Hawaii, I go to thrift shops."
These days, Goodwill has more in common with mainstream retailers than thrift shops. Clothes are displayed on racks positioned in loose clusters, the same model used at Kohl' s. Credit cards are accepted. A special air freshening system keeps musty odors at bay.
"We do not want to smell like a thrift store," Shaw said.
Managers are recruited from the business ranks rather than social service agencies. Shaw's background is in selling high-end ladies' clothing. The manager of the new store, Al Negat, ran drugstores before taking the helm of another Goodwill store in Glassboro.
Goodwill placed the new store in a long-abandoned Phar- Mor pharmacy in a blighted shopping center on the White Horse Pike across from a Weber's Drive-In. Shaw said the building was ideal, its barrel-vaulted facade visible for a mile down the heavily trafficked pike.
The demographics fit, too, a mix of lower- and moderate- income communities bordered by more affluent towns.
"We appeal to a tremendous range of people and that's what you'll find in this area," Shaw said.
Although Goodwill Industries is a nonprofit organization founded to train people with disabilities and disadvantages, the stores' mission is to make money. Last year, area stores took in more than $11 million in sales. Shaw said the new, 22,000-square-foot store has the potential to bring in $2 million in its first year.
Because most of the goods are donated, profit margins can rise as high as 35 percent, as opposed to less than 15 percent for traditional department stores.
But not all Goodwill stores have prospered, prompting an emphasis on the business aspect of the enterprise. When Negat took over the Glassboro operation several years ago, the store was barely breaking even.
"We had too many people just standing around and not caring about their jobs," he said.
Negat trimmed the payroll and put the remaining people in the positions that best suited their talents. He found cheaper sources for supplies and launched a campaign to to publicize the store. The result was a profit margin of 25 percent, a mark Goodwill expects to equal in the new store.
"The practices in retail aren't that different wherever you go," he said.
Goodwill also is following the for-profit pack with such programs as 10-percent discounts offered to shoppers 55 and older on Tuesdays. Retrospect, a spinoff boutique on Philadelphia's South Street, specializes in vintage wares. And Goodwill's Atlantic City store is now an outlet where goods that don't sell in other stores get a final, deep discount.

Circus train is cheered through Camden County
    The Philadelphia Inquirer
    April 9, 2002
Hundreds of people lined the old Reading Railroad line from Camden to Winslow Junction last night to watch a circus train bound for Atlantic City rumble through Camden County.
About 200 people turned out in Haddon Heights alone for what turned out to be a family evening to see the first passenger train in decades go through town. Three locomotives pulled the mile-long Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus train, and adults and children alike cheered after it cleared the borough's Station Avenue crossing.
Circus performers and workers waved to the crowds lining the track.
The circus will perform in Atlantic City tomorrow through Saturday before going to Philadelphia for a 12-day engagement beginning April 17.

Stratford girl crossing street killed by car
By TOM LOUNSBERRY and JASON ALT
    Courier-Post Staff
Teachers and classmates of a 9-year-old borough girl mourned her death Tuesday, a day after a car struck her as she walked home from a friend's house.
Meghan DeBlasio, a third-grader at Parkview School, was crossing Warwick Road near West Harvard Avenue when the fatal accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. Monday, police said.
The driver, Gina R. Groff, 35, of Pine Hill, had a suspended license but wasn't driving recklessly or speeding, police said. Several charges, including driving without a license or insurance, are pending against the Estates Road woman, police said.
Teachers and counselors broke the news Tuesday to students at the district's two schools.
To help show their grief, some of the children wrote letters and drew pictures for Meghan's family, said Superintendent Albert Brown.
"They find ways to express themselves and they're already doing that," he said.
Brown said school employees described Meghan as "a really energetic, outstanding kid - just a wonderful, outstanding child with a lot of personality."
Teachers and staff members "are devastated and in a state of shock right now ... and they are doing their job under a very difficult situation," he said. "They are being extraordinarily professional and doing what they're trained to do."
State officials said this wasn't the first time Groff's license had been suspended. On four previous occasions, Groff lost her license because she didn't have insurance, according to the state Division of Motor Vehicle Services.
Her current suspension, which began in December, occurred because Groff paid for her vehicle registration with a bad check, officials said.
Brown said the district soon would be stressing the importance of pedestrian safety with all students.
Meghan, who had attended classes in Stratford since kindergarten, has a brother who is a sixth-grader at the district's Yellin School, Brown said.

Hiltner coaches 400th win as Sterling prevails
    Courier-Post Staff
Sterling High School boys' basketball coach Bill Hiltner and St. Mary's Hall's Kulwinder Gill reached significant milestones in their careers Tuesday night.
Hiltner posted his 400th career victory as the Silver Knights rolled to a 56-43 Colonial Conference victory over visiting Haddon Township.
Dan Terrell and Dave Cogan each scored 12 points to lead the balanced Sterling attack.

Sterling coach can win 400th Tuesday
    By DON BENEVENTO
    Courier-Post Staff

Bill Hiltner, the Sterling High School boys' basketball coach, is pushing closer to achieving a major career milestone.
With one more win, Hiltner will become only the 12th boys' coach in South Jersey history to reach the 400-win mark.
Hiltner conceded that he is looking forward to joining that elite group. But he also said winning 400 games was never one of his coaching priorities.
"I think some other people have put more thought into this than I have," he said. "I've always thought there are things more important than wins. Do the kids play hard? Do they play unselfishly? Do they play the right way? If they do all of that, the wins take care of themselves."
The Silver Knights will take a 12-2 season record into their next outing, Tuesday night against Haddon Township, in a Colonial Conference game.
Hiltner is now in his 28th season - the past 23 at Sterling. He will go into Tuesday's game game with a career record of 399-310. Much of his success has come in recent years. He is 349-235 at Sterling after spending the first five years of his career at Millville.
Hiltner has seen many changes occur in the game during his coaching career. But he has tried to remain constant in
    his own philosophies.
"I don't think I've changed much in regard to X's and O' s," he said. "We still play man-to-man defense, and I still like to spread the ball around on offense."
But he added that there are differences in other, more intangible areas of the game.
"The kids are the same, but I think the changes have come more in society," he said. "It used to be that you said to a kid, `This is the defense we're going to run and this is the offense we're going to run, and you're going to do it that way because I'm the coach and I said to do it that way.'''
But, he said, that's not always the case anymore.
"I think kids want to question everything now," Hiltner said. "If you don't explain to them why you want something done, I don't think you can get the maximum effort out of them."
In some ways, this has been a transition season for both Hiltner and his team.
In the four years leading into this season, Hiltner's teams were dominated by one of South Jersey's all-time best scorers, guard Ernest Turner.
Turner was such a factor on offense that his presence forced Hiltner to adjust his style of coaching.
"Ernest was able to do so many things with the ball," Hiltner said. "You had to try to get the ball into his hands as often as possible."
That often led to having other players stand around, waiting for things to happen. That is not the kind of game Hiltner likes to coach.
"This year, we move the ball around a lot more, which is the way coach Hiltner likes us to play," said senior guard Jay Cage, Turner's backup last season. "He doesn't want us to play run-and-gun. He doesn't want us to dribble the ball between our legs or anything like that. His point of view is he just wants us to do what we're supposed to do."
Hiltner views this year's team as a more balanced one, especially on offense.
Noting the presence of senior center David Cogan, Hiltner said the guards have worked to get the ball inside more often, and he thinks that has made Sterling a more consistent team.
"With Ernest, we were a perimeter team," Hiltner said. " When we lost, more often than not, it was because we took a lot of 3-point shots and we weren't hitting them on that night."
Sterling still has its share of outside threats. Danny Terrell, Tim Parker and Cage have proven to be capable shooters. The Silver Knights also are a veteran team.
Four of the starters are seniors, and they've grown accustomed to playing the style Hiltner likes to see.
"He's made us stronger players," Terrell said. "He's done everything he can to help us win."

    Shoppers catch carjacking suspect
    November 27, 2001
    By JIM WALSH
    Courier-Post Staff
VOORHEES - Echelon Mall shoppers came to the rescue of a carjacking victim, chasing and subduing a knife-wielding suspect in the parking lot, police said.
The drama began when Louise Wogman of Williamstown arrived at the mall about 1 p.m. Sunday. A man tried to force Wogman back into her car, then took her purse and knocked her down.
But three passers-by confronted and helped catch the suspect, Stephen Collier, 32, a state inmate who walked away from a Camden halfway house this summer while completing a term for drug distribution.
"She said nobody was around when the guy jumped her and then people came out of nowhere," the victim's husband, Jerry Wogman, said Monday. "She thought it was great."
Police said William and Lauren Leahy of Stratford ran to Wogman's car, where Collier threatened them with a knife. William Leahy and another shopper, retired police officer Victor Hidalgo of Sicklerville, chased Collier on foot, catching him near Somerdale Road with help from mall security officer Kathy Laphan.
Wogman was treated at an area hospital for a broken rib and other injuries. The others were unhurt.
Collier was charged with aggravated assault, robbery, carjacking and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Collier, formerly held at Riverfront State Prison in Camden, was completing a term for distributing drugs when he fled the halfway house, according to the state Department of Corrections. He was back in Riverfront on Monday, facing a mandatory three-year extension on his term.
A mall representative said the incident was unusual, noting the complex has no reported car thefts for the past year.

4,200 lose electricity thanks to another squirrel
    Courier-Post Staff
    STRATFORD - November 8, 2001

A squirrel slipped into the Conectiv substation on West Atlantic Avenue and damaged equipment, knocking out electrical power to more than 4,200 customers of the utility company.
It was the fourth time since the beginning of last week that a squirrel had knocked out power in a neighborhood.
The power went out about 3:40 p.m. and was restored by 4:58 p.m. The outage affected parts of Lindenwold, Stratford, Gibbsboro, Voorhees, Somerdale and Gloucester Township.
Similar outages occurred last Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Elizabeth Kennedy, a spokeswoman for the utility, said each time the squirrels have managed to get around guards on the wires at the station and into the station itself.
The utility company was cutting back trees at the station, and spraying a repellent on lines to prevent further outages.
...can't be that hard to stop a squirrel, can it?

Voters in Stratford reject plan to allow liquor sales in town

    STRATFORD - November 8, 2001
For the third time in the borough's 75-year history, voters Tuesday rejected a proposal to allow liquor sales in their community.
A binding referendum that would have allowed the sale of two Class C liquor licenses was defeated almost two to one, 1,233 votes to 725 votes, according to unofficial results.
The owners of La Martinique Bowling Center on the White Horse Pike and D'Amico's Italian Family Restaurant on Warwick Road collected the 460 signatures needed to get the question on the ballot but their efforts fell short at the polls.
"We appreciate the people who voted for it but this is America and people get a choice," La Martinique president David Strippoli said Wednesday.
Strippoli's family has been in business in the borough for more than 100 years. The referendum result could bring that to an end, he said.
In addition to the bowling center, his family ran the old Quaker Store for 50 years and the Modern Way Car Wash for 22 years, Strippoli said.
He said he might obtain a liquor license in Clementon, where officials want him to relocate.
"We've been able to survive without one for 42 years but the climate of the industry is such that we can't," he said.
La Martinique and D'Amico's allow patrons to bring their own alcohol but owners say that can lead to excessive drinking.
The borough has always been dry. Residents voted to keep it that way in 1970 and 1980. A referendum cannot get back on the ballot for five years, borough administrator John Keenan said.
Jean and Jack Rourke, borough residents since 1963, said they voted on opposite sides of the issue.
"I supported it," said Jean Rourke, 70. "I just felt our restaurants should be able to serve a glass of wine."
Jack Rourke, 69, said he opposed it because Class C licenses allow the sale of both drinks and package goods.
"We're here a long time without it and I just didn't see   any need," he said.

Towns hold the line on alcohol
In Stratford, liquor licenses will not be awarded. In Southampton, a bar may not extend its hours.

Like some politicians, drinking took a drubbing on Election Day.
In Stratford, one of the state's 42 dry towns, voters on Tuesday rejected a ballot question probing the possibility of issuing two liquor licenses to local establishments.
    ...
In Stratford, where residents rejected such a question for the third time, 1,140 to 659 - much narrower than the 9-1 ratio in 1970 and 1980 - some said the dry tradition was never a problem for them.
Waiting her turn at a lane in Stratford's sprawling La Martinique Bowling Center on Tuesday afternoon, Davina Chambers, 25, of Somerdale, said she and her friends just buy their alcoholic beverages out of town when they want them. "We just stop off at the liquor store and pick up a six-pack and bring it in when we bowl," Chambers said.
La Martinique and some other local establishments let patrons bring in alcohol from outside the borough, and Chambers said it is less expensive to drink in the bowling center than elsewhere. "You pay five bucks for a beer in a bar, or you can bring your own," she said. "It works out."
But it doesn't work out for the business owners.
If merchants had retail consumption liquor licenses, they would have better control of the situation, said Vincent Pecora, owner of D'Amico's restaurant, a BYOB establishment that banded with the bowling alley to push for the question's passage.
"People actually drink more when you bring your own than at a bar," said Pecora, who estimated that 75 percent of his Friday night customers bring wine to dinner. In the weeks before the election, he and managers from La Martinique handed out flyers urging voters to support the ballot question.
But as the election grew closer, an anti-license faction developed and plastered the town with signs reading "Bowl a strike for Stratford - Vote NO for the liquor license on Nov. 6."
Pecora said he would try to get the question passed again in a few years.
"I can't control the liquor that comes in and out of my place," he said. "Not having liquor licenses doesn't hurt anyone but the business owners."

Stratford residents to vote on allowing liquor sales
    By STEVE LEVINE

    STRATFORD, November 2, 2001
For the first time since its founding more than 75 years ago, liquor licenses may be issued in this dry borough after Tuesday's election.
If approved by voters, a referendum will allow up to two Class "C" liquor licenses to be issued. The licenses would allow businesses that purchase them to sell beer, wine and liquor and sell packaged goods, borough administrator John Keenan said Thursday.
Keenan said the licenses could add up to $500,000 to borough coffers from the one-time sale but cautioned that passage of the referendum is not a sure thing.
"This will be the third time the question will be on the ballot," Keenan said.
Voters defeated similar ballot questions in 1970 and 1980, Keenan said.
He said representatives from D'Amico's Italian Family Restaurant and La Martinique Bowling Center collected the 460 signatures of registered borough voters needed to put the question on the ballot.
State law permits one liquor license per 3,500 people in a municipality. Because Stratford has slightly more than 7, 000 people, the borough may have two licenses, Keenan said.
La Martinique President David Strippoli said the bowling center, which has been in his family for 42 years, needs a liquor license to compete with other South Jersey lanes.
"We have never been permitted to serve alcohol but our customers have always been able to bring alcohol in," he said.
While some customers may like bringing their own, Strippoli said the practice could be abused by patrons more easily than if the house controls how much someone drinks.
"I cannot cut off a customer and that same customer can go out and drive," he said.
Strippoli said he believes that if the bowling center had a liquor license, customers would actually drink less " based on the fact that he will buy by the glass at a premium price."
He acknowledged that even if the referendum passes, La   Martinique and D'Amico's will not be guaranteed a license and must bid for one like any other interested party.

    MESSAGE FROM
    MAYOR ANGELUCCI
    Dear Friends and Neighbors,
We have promised to keep you abreast of any new developments regarding the potential sale of the shopping center at the corner of Longwood Drive and Warwick Road. As of this writing the present owner has entered into a contingent agreement of sale. The contingency is that the purchaser must receive whatever approvals they need to meet the Borough ordinances within six months or the agreement becomes null and void. We have not received any formal application to the Planning or Zoning Boards. I expect that we will receive something within the next month or so. Whatever the purchaser may apply for will have to he discussed at an OPEN PUBLIC HEARING. Some totally false and unsubstantiated rumors have been circulating around town with regard to the future use of the site. We will not know what is proposed for this site until a formal application is received. To repeat, whatever is proposed will be thoroughly aired at the appropriate public hearing.

Stratford council revives plans for new firehouse
    By STEVE LEVINE
    Courier-Post Staff
    STRATFORD - October 11, 2001
In November, residents rejected a nonbinding referendum to demolish the borough firehouse and rebuild it with the help of a $1.2 million bond issue.
On Tuesday, borough council overturned the referendum and revived the firehouse project, capping the cost at $700, 000.
Borough controller John Keenan said Wednesday that had officials not voted to build anew, they faced repair costs to the firehouse off Laurel Road of an estimated $500, 000.
"There were different phases built over 50 years," Keenan said. "We have a flat roof that holds water like a swimming pool. There was supposed to be a second floor but it was never built. Water is causing damage below the roof surface that goes all the way down to the floor."
Keenan said before last year's referendum that officials estimated the average cost to property taxpayers at about $ 63 per year for 10 years. Modified building plans and lower interest rates reduced that estimate to about $25 per year on average for 10 years, he said.
The new firehouse will be built at the same location but on two levels, with an entrance for firetrucks on Union Avenue as well as off Laurel Road.
"There will be drive-through bays so we won't have trucks backing off busy Laurel Road," as they are now, Keenan explained.
Work on the project will not begin until next year.
Homemaker Denise Watkins said Wednesday she supports the council's decision, especially if it would cost almost as much to not build anew.
"It's a positive thing if they can make it safer for traffic," said Watkins, 27, a mother of three. "That's a horrible intersection."
Elizabeth Deverin, a Stratford resident for nearly 35 years, agreed that a new firehouse makes sense for the community.
"I don't think $25 per year would be a hardship for anyone," she said. "It sounds fine to me."
