10.16.08

The Economic Development Committee meets the 1st Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm at the Borough Hall.

Next Meeting: February 4th

Redevelopment will be the main subject of a public meeting here tonight.

The Joint Land Use Board is holding the meeting to share information with residents, as well as solicit public comment on three main redevelopment areas in the borough.

"We want to get the word out to residents," Mayor John Gentless said. "It's an important meeting. We want to be as transparent as we can and invite residents to the meeting."

The areas being designated for redevelopment include the former site of Incollingo's on Warwick Road and the former site of Bradlees department store on the White Horse Pike, which now houses a Goodwill Industries store. The other main area for redevelopment is the land across from Bradlees that includes the LaMartinique Bowling Center and the Bishop and Stratford Court Apartment complexes.

"We want to redevelop the entire 20-acre parcel (at Bradlees)," Gentless said. "It's been somewhat 60 to 70 percent vacant for about 10 years."

A portion of the building is under contract by NextGen Healthcare.

"They have not taken physical possession and it's not clear when they will," said Councilwoman Holly Tate, a liaison to the Joint Land Use Board. "At this site and the (Incollingo's site), both anchor stores are vacant."

The borough council and land use board are working with property owners to redevelop the designated areas and hope to get them on board without forceful action, such as taking over the property through eminent domain.

"We have to start somewhere," Gentless said. "We had a developer reach out to us who wanted to make Bradlees the gateway to Stratford, but the economy will dictate the entire process."

In 2007, voters approved a referendum allowing two liquor licenses to be sold within the borough. A stipulation is that no liquor license will be bid on without redevelopment.

"(The liquor license) has to be part of redevelopment," Tate said. "Residents don't know what's going on since we approved the liquor licenses. They want to know things are happening."

The desire of the council and land use board is to create a redevelopment plan that can be continued under future councils.

"We have to respect the process of redevelopment," said Frank Cahill, chairman of the Joint Land Use Board. "It's not going to be quick. like next week or next month. It's going to take some time, years to get moving forward."

At tonight's meeting, a proposed redevelopment plan will be unveiled with a map delineating the redevelopment areas.

"We need dialogue (with residents)," Gentless added. "It has to be done carefully and thoughtfully."

Ideas range from national food chains and grocery stores to residential destinations.

"We're where Audubon was eight years ago," Gentless said.

Audubon created an aggressive redevelopment plan after J.C. Penney's pulled out of a prominent shopping center on the Black Horse Pike. The Audubon Commons shopping center now features a Wal-Mart, restaurants and numerous stores.

"Our redevelopment is in the embryonic stage," Tate added. "This is the future of our town."

Firetruck helps Seaville man live dream

Monday, January 14, 2008

By WILLIAM H. SOKOLIC
Courier-Post Staff

SEAVILLE, NJ

Like many children, Randy Leiser wanted to be a fireman when he grew up.

6414
WILLIAM H. SOKOLIC/Courier-Post
Randy Leiser looks at the front of Truck 6414 with his son Paul, 3 1/2. Paul rode on the truck with his father and 23-month-old brother, Dan, in Stratford's Fourth of July parade last year.

He wound up with the next best thing. He owns the firetruck once driven by his father and grandfather as volunteers with the Stratford Fire Company in the 1970s and 1980s.

"This was my dream when I was a little boy," the Cape May County resident said. "It came to life."

Truck 6414 -- known around the fire hall as Fourteen -- has always held a fascination for Leiser, a Realtor with Avalon Real Estate Agency. Maybe that's because he arrived in the world not long after the truck arrived in Stratford in 1971.

When he drove the truck in last summer's Fourth of July parade in Stratford, four generations sat aboard Fourteen, including Leiser's two sons, Paul, 3 1/2, and Dan, 23 months. "It was a nice homecoming. It was the first time since it left Stratford that it returned," Leiser said.

The fire company retired Fourteen in 1998, after 27 years of service.

"I wound up surfing the Internet and did a Google search on the truck and turned up a Web site of a collector in Missouri who owned antique firetrucks. On a whim, I e-mailed him. He e-mailed me back and said it was for sale. I knew I had to buy it."

Leiser's wife, Sheri, had a different opinion.

"She looked at me like I was crazy," he said. "It took the better part of three months to convince her. What swayed her was this wasn't like a car or boat or typical play toy. It's one of a kind, the only firetruck I ever loved. If I didn't take this opportunity, I'd regret it for the rest of my life. Sheri finally said, "Go for it.' "

He declined to disclose the price he paid.

Leiser and his father, Paul, an owner of Avalon Real Estate Agency, picked the truck up after its arrival in West Chester, Pa., from Missouri.

"I felt like I was 12 years old again as we rumbled down the road, en route to Seaville. Two blocks from home, I got my first driving lesson," Leiser said.

His father, who still has a home in Stratford, drove Fourteen from West Chester, but two blocks from Leiser's house, the pair switched seats.

"I've been having a ball ever since," Leiser said.

Paul Leiser, who joined the fire company in the early 1970s, first worked on the truck as a crew member. His father-in-law, Ed Irion, also of Stratford, taught him how to drive it, and when Irion retired, Paul Leiser, then a lieutenant, took over as driver.

"I took Randy and his brother Mark over to the fire house on Saturdays," Paul Leiser said. "They would help me wash the truck and blow-dry it by riding with me around Stratford. They'd wave to friends, blow the air horn. I never realized what an impact all that would have on Randy. They're among his fondest childhood memories."

As young boys, Randy and Mark Leiser watched their father and grandfather at drill nights on Tuesdays. Leiser still remembers listening to the scanner at home while fires were occurring. In warmer weather, he rode his bike to watch the firefighters.

"My dad would come home, his hair and clothes smelling like smoke," he said.

Paul Leiser got a reputation as the Lone Ranger. On one occasion, he responded to an early-morning fire at a strip center on the White Horse Pike in Stratford. A couple of pumpers had already responded, leaving him as the only crew member on Fourteen. He had to park, get the outriggers out, connect the hoses, let the ladder out, climb up and put water on the fire.

When Fourteen arrived in Seaville in 2004, Leiser had a mechanic from the truck's manufacturer, American LaFrance, inspect the major systems to make sure it was still roadworthy. The truck required some basic maintenance: an oil change and fuel filter and minor brake repairs.

"It was out of service since 1998," Leiser said. "But I was fortunate. I take it out once or twice a month for a ride. I do a couple of parades a year. The ladder and pumps still work."

Leiser even got the original bell back. When Stratford sold the truck, the fire company kept the bell. Leiser bought a replacement and swapped it for the original. The siren was stolen at a rest stop. But thanks to a member of the Laurel Springs Fire Company, Leiser acquired an old siren and found a man in Arizona to restore it.

On the way to the Fourth of July parade, Leiser rolled up in front of his grandfather's house. "He was in the doorway and said "I could hear you coming.' "

Irion, 89, was the first officer in charge of Fourteen.

"I broke it in," said Irion, who served with the fire company from 1952 to 1975. "I remember what a job it was to haul that big thing around. It was bigger than the rest of the trucks we had. But once I got used to it, it was a dream to drive. It's amazing how well it held up since 1971. It's still in excellent shape, like it came out of the factory."

Leiser built a garage to house the 40-foot truck.

"It's out of the weather and protected," said Leiser, who, in 2006, wrote a small book for his kids on the story of Fourteen. "At first, my neighbors thought I was nuts. but the kids thought I was a hero. Now they're all used to seeing firetrucks in the neighborhood now."

Truck has seen fires near and far

Truck 6414 has its share of battle scars from fires fought throughout Camden County.

Because it had a 100-foot aerial ladder, the truck was sent to out-of-town fires, including a condo fire across from the Echelon Mall. Hi-Nella and Laurel Springs did not have aerial trucks, so 6414 was the first-due aerial on any structure fire there as well, said Randy Leiser. It often went further, to Lindenwold, Clementon, Somerdale and Magnolia, he said.

In all, the truck put on 14,000 miles in 27 years of service.

Stratford firefighters push the new truck into their fire hall at Laurel Road and the White Horse Pike on May 3, 1971.

Some notable fires:

Stratford Plaza apartments, now known as Woodmere. "I have an audiotape of that one, which includes communications between the fire crews and Camden County radio dispatch. On that tape I can hear my dad's voice calling in "Truck 6414 responding,' then "Truck 6414 on location,' then calling for water once the aerial ladder and ladder pipe were ready. You can tell the adrenaline was pumping."

Multiple times to an apartment complex in Gloucester Township. Leiser believes it's the Lakeside Apartments. "A number of large fires occurred there, and my dad related the story to me of being at the tip of the aerial ladder while controlling the ladder pipe and directing it onto the roof, directly over top the flames."

Grossman's Lumber Yard fire, along the White Horse Pike. "This is one of the last "big ones' my truck fought, though it was well after my dad's time as a volunteer."

Teen killed, 2 critically hurt in Stratford crash

Friday, December 22, 2006

By LEO STRUPCZEWSKI Courier-Post Staff

STRATFORD

A 16-year-old Clementon boy was killed in a car accident early this morning while leading Stratford police on a car chase, officials said.

Eric Keeny lost control of a stolen SUV along a bend in Longwood Drive near Overhill Road, said Acting Camden County Prosecutor Joshua M. Ottenberg.

Keeny, accompanied in the car by a 15-year-old Gloucester City boy and 16-year-old Sewell boy, fled Stratford police officer Robert Kelly around 1:45 a.m., officials said. Kelly had attempted to pull over Keeny when he saw the SUV, described as an older model Ford Bronco, traveling westbound on the White Horse Pike near Vassar Avenue. Keeny fled south on Vassar Avenue at a high rate of speed and Kelly lost sight of his vehicle near Vassar Avenue and Grand Avenue, officials said.

Police then began searching for the vehicle and discovered the vehicle had been involved in a crash at Longwood Drive and Overhill Road. A preliminary investigation showed Keeny hit two trees and came to rest on the front lawn of a Longwood Drive home. The two other passengers were ejected from the SUV, Ottenberg said. They were transported by helicopter to Cooper University Hospital in Camden and were in critical but stable condition this afternoon, Ottenberg said. Their names were not released.

Police later determined the vehicle had been stolen overnight after a commercial burglary at a Williamstown Auto Shop, officials said. The auto repair shop was unaware the business had been burglarized, Ottenberg said.

Agents from the Camden County Fatal and Serious Accident Investigation Team and Stratford Police Department are investigating the collision. The criminal investigation is being conducted by the Stratford Police Department. Police are investigating the possibility that alcohol played a part in the accident.

STRATFORD, N.J. - In an age of multimillion-dollar high-tech weapons systems, sometimes it's the simplest ideas that can save lives. Which is why a New Jersey mother is organizing a drive to send cans of Silly String to Iraq.

American troops use the stuff to detect trip wires around bombs, as Marcelle Shriver learned from her son, a soldier in Iraq.

Before entering a building, troops squ

irt the plastic goo, which can shoot strands about 10 to 12 feet, across the room. If it falls to the ground, no trip wires. If it hangs in the air, they know they have a problem. The wires are otherwise nearly invisible.Silly String

Now, 1,000 cans of the neon-colored plastic goop are packed into Shriver's one-car garage in this town outside Philadelphia, ready to be shipped to the Middle East thanks to two churches and a pilot who heard about the drive.

"If I turn on the TV and see a soldier with a can of this on his vest, that would make this all worth it," said Shriver, 57, an office manager.

The maker of the Silly String brand, Just for Kicks Inc. of Watertown, N.Y., has contacted the Shrivers about donating some. Other manufacturers make the stuff, too, and call their products "party string" or "crazy string."

"Everyone in the entire corporation is very pleased that we can be involved in something like this," said Rob Oram, Just for Kicks product marketing manager. He called the troops' use of Silly String innovative.

The military is reluctant to talk about the use of Silly String, saying that discussing specific tactics will tip off insurgents.

But Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, said Army soldiers and Marines are not forbidden to come up with new ways to do their jobs, especially in Iraq's ever-evolving battlefield. And he said commanders are given money to buy nonstandard supplies as needed.

In other cases of battlefield improvisation in Iraq, U.S. soldiers have bolted scrap metal to Humvees in what has come to be known as "Hillybilly Armor." Medics use tampons to plug bullet holes in the wounded until they can be patched up.

Also, soldiers put condoms and rubber bands around their rifle muzzles to keep out sand. And troops have welded old bulletproof windshields to the tops of Humvees to give gunners extra protection. They have dubbed it "Pope's glass" — a reference to the barriers that protect the pontiff.

In an October call to his mother, Army Spc. Todd Shriver explained how his unit in the insurgent hotbed of Ramadi learned from Marines to use Silly String on patrol to detect boobytraps.

After sending some cans to her 28-year-old son, Shriver enlisted the help of two priests and posted notices in her church and its newsletter. From there, the effort took off, with money and Silly String flowing in. Parishioners have been dropping cans into donation baskets.

"There's so much that they can't do, and they're frustrated, but this is something they can do," said the Rev. Joseph Capella of St. Luke's Church in Stratford.

The Shrivers said they would not mind seeing the string as standard-issue equipment, but they don't blame the military for not supplying it.

"I don't think that they can think of everything," said Ronald Shriver, 59, a retired salesman. "They're taught to improvise, and this is something that they've thought of."

Marcelle Shriver said that since the string comes in an aerosol can, it is considered a hazardous material, meaning the Postal Service will not ship it by air. But a private pilot who heard about her campaign has agreed to fly the cans to Kuwait — most likely in January — where they will then be taken to Iraq.

Shriver said she will continue her campaign as long as her son is overseas and she has Silly String to send.

"I know that he's going come through this. I hope they all do," she said.

Crash kills Somerdale teen

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

BELLMAWR

A sport-utility vehicle crash on Interstate 295 early Saturday took the life of a recent Sterling Regional High School.

Shortly before 1 a.m. Justin Williams, 18, of Sunset Drive in Somerdale, was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer in the left lane of I-295 North. State police said the highway was wet and it was raining.

Williams, who was wearing his seat belt, lost control, struck a curb and then hit a tree on the vehicle's driver's side some 50 feet off the road, state police said.

The crash into the tree sent the Explorer back onto the highway, where it came to rest in the right lane, police said.

An ambulance transported Williams to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced dead about 4 a.m., police said.

Two passengers in Williams' car survived with minor injuries: Matthew Levenchuck, 16, and David Serten, 18, both of Stratford, police said.

Alcohol was not involved in the accident, police said.

Williams, who graduated from high school in June, completed the school's Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program, said Jack McCulley, superintendent of the Sterling district.

He also played on the school volleyball team, worked as a video technician and volunteered with Sterling's blood drive, McCulley said.

"He was a likable young man. He was very cooperative, very happy, always with a smile on his face," the superintendent said.

Outside of school, Williams served as a junior member of the all-volunteer Magnolia Fire Company from July 2003 through March of this year, said Magnolia Fire Chief Gary Riebel.

"He was pretty active," Riebel said. "He used to ride his bike to the calls. He was a good kid."

For Sterling coach, joy and grief on and off court

Friday, March 3, 2006wpe1.jpg (13102 bytes)
By PHIL ANASTASIA
Courier-Post Staff

Standing at midcourt after her basketball team's thrilling tournament victory, Sterling High School's Cassi Bryant said one of the saddest, strangest sentences in South Jersey sports history.
"We wanted to win," Bryant said, "for her daughter who was about to be born and for her father who had just passed away."
This was Wednesday night, moments after Sterling beat Glassboro 54-50 in double-overtime in the quarterfinals of the South Jersey Group 2 tournament.
The Silver Knights dedicated the victory to their absent coach, Kate McDonald, who on Wednesday night gave birth to her first child, a daughter named MacKenzie.
On Tuesday night, McDonald lost her father, Kurt Schmid, who died unexpectedly at age 52. Schmid was one of the Silver Knights' biggest supporters, a regular at their games.
"I don't remember a game when he wasn't here," Sterling senior Kate Brennan said.
Said Bryant: "He always supported us. Win or lose, he always would tell us, "Good game.' "
Responsible adults always preach to young athletes that winning and losing isn't everything, that such trivial matters pale in comparison to life and death.
At this critical stage of their season, the Sterling girls are seeing the contrast in bold relief, as their popular coach experiences the joy of becoming a parent in conjunction with the heartbreak of losing one.
Still, there's another game to be played. The Silver Knights are determined to honor their coach, as well as one of the biggest fans, with their best possible effort.
"We know it would be important to her for us to focus on playing as good as we can," Sterling senior Nicole Mancini said.
Under the direction of acting coach Joe LaRubbio, who has guided the team in McDonald's absence, the Silver Knights have reached the semifinals of the sectional tournament. They will play at rival Haddonfield tonight.
The team's senior captains said the Silver Knights have rallied around McDonald, who was one of the best players in South Jersey during her career at Sterling in the early 1990s.
"She's so much more than a coach to us," Mancini said.
Added Bryant: "She treats us like we're already her children."
Former Sterling coaches Bill Ulrich and Jackie Mulligan, both of whom are close with McDonald and her family, said they saw Schmid at Sterling's final regular-season game Friday night. That was McDonald's last game before she left the team to attend to her pregnancy.
"All he could talk about was how excited he was to be a grandfather," Mulligan said of Schmid.
Ulrich, who was McDonald's coach when she was known as Kate Schmid and was named South Jersey Player of the Year by the Courier-Post in 1994, said Kurt Schmid and his wife Jill were two of the program's biggest supporters.
"They supported all the girls, not just Kate," Ulrich said. "Just great, great people. In all my years of coaching, I don't think I ever met a more close-knit family."
Mulligan resigned after last season to devote more time to her family. McDonald was her assistant coach the last few seasons and moved up to become head coach before this season.
"I just can't even imagine this," Mulligan said. "To be so excited about having your first baby, and have this happen."
For the Sterling players, the experience has led to a difficult balancing act.
"In her sadness, we know she can look to her baby for happiness," Brennan said. "Maybe we can give her something else to be happy about."

SCOTT ANDERSON/Courier-Post
Maple Shade La-Z-Boy store manager Steven Easterday demonstrates how to watch Sunday's super bowl -- in a relaxed and reclined state.

Friday, February 3, 2006
By GRETA GUEST
Gannett News Service

Derek Mozham will sacrifice 25 inches of television screen to preside over his Super Bowl XL house party from his throne in the basement -- a 10-year-old, tan, plush La-Z-Boy recliner.
Mozham, 35, an energy marketer from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., is so attached to his La-Z-Boy he would rather watch the 35-inch TV in cozy comfort than view the game from his theater room upstairs with its 60-inch set, but newer and stiffer furniture.
"It's just the comfort of kicking back with your feet up," Mozham said. "For the three hours of the game, you are just in your own zone. Maybe it's a family trait. Dad has one, too. He just lives in his chair."
Steven Easterday, manager of the Maple Shade La-Z-Boy store, also will be chilling in his domain Sunday as the Pittsburgh Steelers takes on the Seattle Seahawks in Detroit. His favorite seat in the house is finished in deep blue leather.
"I'll be in my La-Z-Boy chair watching the big screen television," said Easterday, 38, who is planning a party at his Stratford home. "It's just the way a good Super Bowl should be watched, even if the Eagles aren't playing."
For the record, Easterday is an Eagles fan, but since the Birds aren't in the mix, he'll be rooting for Pittsburgh.
Recline in style La-Z-Boy Inc., based in Monroe, Mich., was founded in 1928 and invented the upholstered reclining chair in 1929. But things really took off in the 1970s when the widespread use of the remote control converged with sports advertising campaigns featuring La-Z-Boys and sports heroes such as Joe Namath, Don Shula and Alex Karras.
The cult of La-Z-Boy and the term "armchair quarterback" were born, resonating still with men today. The company has branched out, offering coffee tables and end tables as well as an interior design service.
"It's the style and comfort," said Easterday. "It's also the history behind them and how they perfected the reclining chair."
Options on the comfy chairs include massage, heat and trays that fold down to accommodate drinks and snacks. Leather is still the fabric of choice for guys.
"There are a number of options to make it comfortable and flexible," said Easterday.
Football frenzy
Most football fans would love a seat on the sidelines for the big game, but with the game states away and tickets going for around $4,000 on the Internet, La-Z-Boy provides a bargain with prices ranging from $399 to $1,949.
And men across the country have staked out the recliner as their turf. Mike Bernacchi, a marketing professor at the University of Detroit Mercy, said La-Z-Boy has received good play from its 1970s marketing, particularly since it dovetailed with the early Super Bowls.
"It was the football game with beer and chips. It was a result of that mentality that La-Z-Boy developed a football chair," Bernacchi said. "It really became an almost cultish kind of thing with guys. It is the essence of enjoyment, being plugged into your football game in as much leisure as you can."
Some think the firm should bring back the glory days of the '70s with its football-heavy advertising. La-Z-Boy never advertised during the Super Bowl and has no plans to do so this year, said company marketing director Jennifer Sieverston.
After the football campaign, the company stopped using celebrity spokesmen in its advertising campaigns and went toward campaigns targeting women. The reason? Women make most furniture-buying decisions. The new ads highlighted the company's other products such as couches and wood furniture.
But that approach may not be so savvy, said C. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group in Charleston, S.C.
"La-Z-Boy hasn't done much with football since that one campaign and I thought that was a mistake. They haven't made that connection with every Super Bowl," Beemer said.
As a result, the company with $2 billion in annual sales has lost some market share to other recliner makers, including Lane Home Furnishings and Ashley Furniture Industries Inc., he said.
Still, recliners carve out the one area in the furniture industry where men drive the majority of purchasing decisions. Men make 55 percent of recliner buying decisions with women making 45 percent. But women make 72 percent of the calls on what type of other upholstered furniture to buy, Beemer said.
Buddy Wray, 59, of Mullica Hill, was shopping in Maple Shade to replace a La-Z-Boy that lasted 15 years. He likes the wide, soft cushions and long extension on the footrest.
"They're comfortable and the back of the chair is high," he said. "You can watch a football game or just doze."

Stratford board hears condo plan

Wednesday, December 7, 2005

By JIM WALSH
Courier-Post Staff

STRATFORD
The zoning board on Tuesday night considered a controversial plan to erect a three-story condominium complex at the site of a current shopping center.

The board took no action by press time at a meeting attended by about 500 people, many of them opposed to the project.
Developer Maninder Sethi hopes to build 66 units of age-restricted housing on part of the Laurel Mill Shopping Center on Warwick Road at Longwood Drive.

"This project is a benefit for Stratford," said William Hyland, attorney for Sethi.
Hyland said Stratford residents would see no "substantial" negative impact.

Opponents say Sethi's plan, which requires multiple exemptions from local zoning laws, would aggravate traffic problems on Warwick Road and impose a burden on municipal services.

Karen Wilson, 39, a lifelong resident, expressed concern that the building, once constructed, could be used for a different purpose.
"People are afraid of its bringing in rental properties," said Wilson, who expressed concern over the possible impact on parking, property values and local schools.

Traffic engineer David Shropshire said the traffic impact would be negligible, noting that seniors tend to avoid driving at rush hours. Audience members reacted to that with skepticism.

Some residents cautioned against the rush to judgment, noting the complex would upgrade the area and contribute to the borough's tax base.

"The application has never been heard and there are folks shooting it down," resident Mike Mancini stated before the meeting. "People just need to listen to the facts first and then make an informed decision."

Attorney Jeffrey Baron argued against the project on behalf of a neighbors' group.

The planned complex would replace about 25,000 square feet of the existing shopping center. That space, once the site of a Grant's discount store, is mostly vacant. The condo complex would be perpendicular to Warwick Road and would stand on a 3.5-acre site carved from the 7-acre shopping center.

Other stores already at the center, including Incollingo's supermarket, are expected to remain.

Among other changes, the site must be rezoned from commercial to residential use. Sethi also wants permission to offer 99 parking spaces, where 132 are required.
In the season of giving, Goodwill needs a hand
Courier-Post

A fire at the charity's Stratford location might result in 30,000 items of clothing being unusable. South Jerseyans should help out.
This is the season when most everyone is especially attuned to the needs of those who have little. But this holiday, one of the organizations designed to help those in need finds itself in need of a helping hand.

On Monday, a fire struck the Goodwill facility in Stratford, the region's largest retail Goodwill store.

A blaze damaged about 30,000 pieces of donated clothing. That loss likely will be a serious hardship for families who cannot afford to purchase winter clothing at retail prices.

Hours after the fire was extinguished about 6 a.m. Monday, people came to the store looking for affordable recycled clothing and other essentials sold at deep discounts, according to John Hildebrandt, director of sales for Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey/Quaker City Goodwill. They were turned away empty-handed. The clothes Goodwill receives as donations sustained smoke, water or soot damage, Hildebrandt said.

In addition to that pain, the loss of the clothing also will hurt Goodwill's primary goal. The organization relies upon sales to fund job training for those in need.

Its mission, according to its regional Web site, is to provide education, job training and employment services for individuals with disabilities and other disadvantages, such as such as welfare dependency, illiteracy and spousal abuse.

"Goodwill is all about the power of work," the site explains. "Work helps build self-confidence, independence and dignity. At Goodwill, we believe everyone deserves a chance to have these things in life."

Those are sentiments everyone can support.

And the organization isn't giving up the fight.

The store now is seeking replacement donations of clothing and other items so it can be ready for business when repairs are completed.
We urge South Jersey residents to take a moment during this busy season and do a little spring cleaning. If you have winter clothing -- or any items of clothing -- to donate to the Stratford Goodwill, make it a priority to drop the items off as soon as possible at the donation center.

Your donation can help a family purchase needed winter clothing while supporting the Goodwill's training programs. What better way to get into the spirit of the holidays?

Somerdale to redevelop plaza
By JIM WALSH
Courier-Post Staff

SOMERDALE
The long-struggling Lions Head Plaza shopping center will be transformed into a town center with a Wal-Mart superstore and up to 200 new homes under a $40 million plan unveiled by officials Monday night.

"This is, without a doubt, the single biggest economic development project in the history of the town," said Mayor Gary Passanante.

The project could boost annual tax revenues by $1.2 million for Somerdale and by $227,000 for neighboring Magnolia, Passanante said.

Lions Head Plaza, a 52-acre complex, opened in 1988 at White Horse Pike and Evesham Road with about 230,000 square feet of retail and commercial space.
It is now about 70 percent vacant.

Plans call for more than 400,000 square feet of retail in a downtown setting.
A free-standing Wal-Mart would cover about 204,000 square feet in Somerdale and Magnolia, and would include a supermarket and a gas station. Plans also call for 210,000 square feet of additional retail space, including an existing Cinemark multiplex.

The developer, National Realty & Development Corp., also envisions 100 units of age-restricted housing and 50 to 100 units of conventional housing.
The plan also calls for new access roads to the center, with a traffic signal to be installed along White Horse Pike at Washington Avenue.

Access problems helped doom Lions Head Plaza, as did limited visibility and the bankruptcy of several national discounters, said John Orrico, National Realty's managing director.

About 150 people on Monday attended a public meeting on the project at Sterling High School.

"Evesham Road is a nightmare at rush hour," noted Lisa Mascieri of Magnolia, who also expressed concern about Wal-Mart's impact on local businesses.

Passanante, pressed by attorney Jeffrey Baron, declined to rule out the use of eminent domain to acquire property for the project.

Passanante said the project would put Somerdale on the map.
"I'm tired of having to say, "We're Somerdale. That's next to Voorhees,' " he said. "We want people to know where Somerdale is."
Cyclist hurt in Lawnside crash

Saturday, December 3, 2005
By TOM LOUNSBERRY
Courier-Post Staff

LAWNSIDE

A Runnemede man was in critical but stable, condition Friday after a bicycle he was riding collided with a police vehicle earlier in the day.

Police said James Kershaw, 20, of Runnemede was riding across the White Horse Pike about 2:07 a.m. near the Lowe's Home Improvement store in Lawnside when he apparently pedaled into the side of a Stratford Police sport utility patrol vehicle driven by Stratford Police Sgt. John Brown, said Bill Shralow, spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Shralow said Brown was traveling west on the pike following a motorist suspected of speeding when the accident occurred. The office did not have either his lights or siren on at the time of the accident and immediately stopped following the other vehicle.

Kershaw suffered multiple injuries.

He was admitted to the trauma unit at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, Shralow said.

Brown was given some time off to recover from the trauma of the accident and will return to duty when he feels that he is ready, Shralow said.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the accident because it involved a police vehicle.

Fire strikes Goodwill
Tuesday, November 29, 2005

By JASON NARK
Courier-Post Staff

STRATFORD
John Hildebrandt shuffled through the shallow, black water that covered the linoleum floors and carpet of the Goodwill store Monday with a look of concern on his face.

Although Hildebrandt was grateful that no one was injured in an early-morning fire at the store, he feared many people could be hurt this holiday season if the blaze forced Goodwill's largest local retail outlet to close or scrap its inventory.

The damage appeared to be limited to a small portion of the store, but the store's 30,000 pieces of clothing may need to be destroyed because of smoke, soot or water damage, Hildebrandt said.

"We've had to turn away so many people already today," said Hildebrandt, director of sales for Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey/Quaker City.

The fire was reported at 5:16 a.m. Monday, Fire Chief Michael Meyers said. Firefighters brought the blaze under control around 5:50 a.m.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation Monday afternoon.

One of the storefront's 20-foot glass windows was broken, Meyers said, and Hildebrandt noted there was a large rock inside the store when he arrived.

Business picks up at all Goodwill stores during the fall and winter as shoppers prepare for cold weather, Hildebrandt said.
"People need to buy clothes. All of our stuff might be destroyed," he said.

Although the store will be closed temporarily, some of its 40 employees will be transferred to other sites. Others will continue to work at the donation center in the back of the Stratford store.

The Stratford store helps provide funds for Goodwill's job training programs for residents with disabilities and disadvantages, said Michael Shaw, Goodwill's executive vice president.

"Getting the store up and running again is of the utmost importance to us as it generates substantial revenue in support of our mission," Shaw said. "The public can greatly assist us in our recovery efforts by donating to us now so that when repairs are complete, we can restock the store with merchandise."

HOW TO HELP
The donation center at the Goodwill store at 222 S. White Horse Pike in Stratford will remain open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Resident hospitalized after Stratford blaze
Tuesday, November 29, 2005

Courier-Post staff

STRATFORD
A borough woman was hospitalized with chest pains Monday after she found her home engulfed in flames.

The two-alarm fire caused significant damage to the duplex, located in the first block of Columbia Avenue, Fire Chief Michael Meyers said.

The Camden County Fire Marshal's Office was trying to determine what sparked the blaze.

The fire was reported at 10:24 a.m. Firefighters brought it under control at 11:34 a.m., Meyers said.

Firefighters arrived at the duplex to find flames shooting from the windows, according to Meyers.

Neither occupant was home when the fire broke out, Meyers said, but one resident returned home while the structure was burning. She was taken to Kennedy Memorial Hospital, Stratford, for treatment of chest pains.

The woman's name was not available.

Sterling prevails on fourth-quarter surge
Saturday, October 22, 2005

Courier-Post Staff

bilde.jpg (11662 bytes)

It was far from a vintage Sterling football performance Friday night, but when push came to shove the Silver Knights responded to the challenge.
The Silver Knights scored 20 unanswered points in the final 9:21 of the game for a hard-earned 27-7 win over a gutty and gritty Haddonfield team to remain unbeaten in the Colonial Conference Liberty Division.

"When they tied the game in the fourth quarter, I wasn't overly concerned," said Sterling quarterback Arthur Ellis, who turned in another masterful performance. "I figured our senior leadership would find a way to win the game."

Well, it was Ellis who provided the needed spark for Sterling (5-1) down the stretch.

With the score tied 7-7 early in the fourth, Ellis tossed his only pass of the game -- a 58-yard touchdown strike to Steve Williams that gave Sterling the lead for keeps with 9:21 left to play.

"When Steve gets single coverage, I know I can get him the ball," Ellis said. "I just knew he would catch the ball."

"Art threw a beautiful pass," Williams said. "We got kind of lucky because the defender was right there, but I think he jumped too soon and the ball just when over his hands into my arms."

"Up to when Arthur made that play, Haddonfield was giving us all we could handle," Sterling coach Jim Gallagher said. "After that, we kind of wore them down. But you have to hand it to Frank (Haddonfield coach Frank DeLano) for getting his kids to play a great game tonight."

After the big play, the Silver Knights added a pair of touchdowns on a 36-yard run by Rich McClellan, who had 82 rushing yards on the night, and a 4-yard scoring dash by Ike Ash with 1:59 to go.

"We may have taken Haddonfield a little lightly," Williams said. "But we woke up when we had to in the fourth quarter."

10 left homeless by 2-alarm blaze; fundraising drives planned for family

    By TOM LOUNSBERRY
    Courier-Post Staff
    STRATFORD

Authorities continued their search Friday for the cause of a two-alarm fire that left 10 people homeless when it destroyed their house, which was more than 125 years old.

No one was injured in the blaze at 17 Harvard Ave., which was reported at 3:25 p.m. Thursday. The borough's fire company and firefighters from four other Camden County communities took two hours to bring the fire under control, said Stratford Fire Chief Michael Meyers.

Meyers said four of the 10 residents were inside the 2 1/2-story wood-frame home and had all escaped by the time firefighters arrived.
Meyers said the blaze erupted on an open porch area and quickly spread up and into the home.

"It was heavily involved in flames when we arrived. The interior, exterior and contents of the home were destroyed. They were left with very little, if anything," Meyers said.

He said the home had been converted into two living quarters. They were both occupied by members of the same extended family of the home's owner, David Goff.

Fundraising drives were being planned to help the family but details had not been finalized Friday.

The Camden County Chapter of the American Red Cross was helping the victims of the fire, five adults and five children.
They were being provided with temporary shelter, food and clothing.

The Camden County Fire Marshal's Office was investigating the blaze.

Woman, 90, dies after fall in cesspool

    Tuesday, February 15, 2005

CAMDEN - A 90-year-old Stratford woman who fell 10 feet into a cesspool behind her home earlier this month has died from her injuries.

Catherine McCleary of the first block of Temple Avenue died Monday, said officials at Cooper University Hospital.

McCleary was in her back yard Feb. 7 fixing a railing along her patio when she fell. Water accumulation from the recent storm is believed to have eroded and weakened the cesspool's asphalt covering, police said.

Mail carrier Kevin Breitenstine heard McCleary screaming, walked to the back yard and found her. He called 9-1-1 from his cell phone. Firefighters responded and pulled McCleary out about 10 minutes later.

Breitenstine was scheduled to be honored by the borough and postal service this morning.
