Alumni treasure military school

Only a few buildings remain of what was once the Stratford Military Academy.

The barracks with its rows of windows overlooking a large, grassy lawn sits next to the old pool building. Just past the flagpole is the mansion where younger children were housed and some classes were held.

"There's not a lot of historical information on the academy," said Jack Cathrall, 90, the Stratford historian. "The first classes of the Stratford Military Academy were held 1935."

There is renewed interest in the military academy, with former cadets contacting the Stratford Borough office for more information on it. Cathrall and John Keenan, the borough clerk, are gathering as much information as possible from the former students because of the lack of documentation. The scant information they do have is shared on the borough Web site, but they are trying to find more information to share.

The military academy closed in the late 1970s and sat vacant for many years.

The site on Laurel Road that was eventually purchased and run by the YWCA in the 1980s and is now the home of the Stratford Classical Christian Academy. The Christian Academy purchased the 23-acre property in 2007.

The Christian Academy renovated and repaired all of the buildings on the property. Today the academy is full of children from grades kindergarten through eighth grade learning through the classical method of teaching.

"We completely restored the flag display," said Ralph Cochran, the Christian Academy board president. Some former cadets have been able to illustrate what the academy was like by sharing their experiences.

"When we would go to the pool I was always a fish in water," recalled Christopher Bennett, 52, of Richmond, Va., who attended the academy in 1968 and remembered trying to get a dive in even though it was time to get out of the pool. "As I broke surface (the instructor) slapped me so hard he chipped my front tooth."

Bennett, who said he enjoyed his time at the academy, went on to join the U.S. Navy and became a dental technician.

With a love of mathematics, Bryan Ball, 50, of Princeton, who attended the academy from 1966 to 1970, skipped two grades he went on to become an engineer.

Many of those that attended were troublemakers or members of broken homes.

One of the bad boys who attended was a 9-year-old Tom Hainsworth from 1968 to 1969.

"My mother put us in military school because my brother and I weren't well behaved," said Hainsworth, 49, of Spring Hill, Fla.

Hainsworth remembers the school with mixed emotions.

"It was a combination of exciting and scary," he said.

Gagan's a great place

By KIM MULFORD • Courier-Post Staff • November 28, 2008

I'm still new to Indian cuisine, but after some visits to local South Asian eateries, I'm already addicted to this spicy, saucy food.

Gagan Palace in Stratford is a good place to start experimenting. The dining room is more elegant than its strip-mall exterior would suggest, with thick tablecloths and upholstered seating, and carefully folded cloth napkins and heavy glassware at each place setting. There are many windows offering a view of the Lindenwold station of the PATCO Speed Line across the street.

Contemporary Indian music lilts over the sound system.

If you want to try a little of everything and you want it fast, hit the lunch buffet for $9.95. There's a lot to take in: a soup, vegetarian appetizers, several meat and vegetable curries, naan (white flour flat bread), rice, and a selection of cold accompaniments like salad, chutneys, raita (yogurt with cucumber and herbs), and mixed Indian pickles.

The chicken tikka masala was so good, I was tempted to lick the plate clean. Chunks of boneless white chicken were soaked in a creamy, hot and spicy tomato sauce, perfect for swiping up with a piece of naan or scooping over rice. If you want to sample one of the hundreds of ways Indians cook with lentils, try dal makhani, a saucy treatment with butter, onions, garlic and tomatoes. If you're bored with American-style steamed spinach, try Gagan's palak paneer: spinach cooked with homemade Indian cheese, spices and herbs.

The homemade raita (yogurt with grated cucumber and herbs) is a nice way to tame the flames before the next course.

So with taste buds happily tingling, I tackled the salad bar. But again, I'm new to this. The cilantro herb dressing I chose was indeed cool in temperature and bright green in hue, but that was a disguise for its peppery heat.

With my mouth now on fire and my glass of water completely drained, it was on to dessert.

I have a new appreciation for rice pudding, or kheer. After a hot, spicy meal, the sweet creamy rice was a perfect way to end. I also liked the gulab jamun -- soft doughnut-like balls dipped in honey syrup and served warm.

The meal was memorable and an adventure. My only wish is that my server had left me with his pitcher of ice water.

Sterling, 5 local districts to plan for joint pre-K-12 (Nov 23)

Five local school systems and the Sterling regional high school district are planning to study issues that would be involved in creating a single, consolidated pre-K-12 district.

The system, if created, would serve students from Hi Nella, Laurel Springs, Magnolia, Somerdale and Stratford. High school students from those towns attend Sterling.

The districts have authorized a study to be completed by Rowan University. State law requires each executive county superintendent to plan for elimination of all school districts except for Pre-K-12 grade districts by March 2010, they noted in a statement Friday.
