Born and raised in Stratford. My parents still live on Wright Avenue and my brother lives on Washington Blvd. So many memories!!! I'm still best friends with my Stratford neighbor. Dr. Herring is still my dads Dr. Love the site!!!
Hello to our old neighbors on Temple Ave. from the Kennedy family. Hello to the Britts, Sheras,Gibson's,Mobley's,Sherman's and the Parker's.
My family lived in Stratford until 1968, We moved south to Spartanburg, SC. What a culture shock for us!! Our home was at 8 Temple Ave. Stratford was a great community to grow up in. The memories of my youth are precious and dear to my heart. Growing up in this community made me the person I am today. We attended Stratford UMC and I was in the Girl Scout troop there. We wanted to say hello to all of our old neighbors.

Hi, Just wanted to change our e-mail address and say Hello again from Florida. Been down here since 1990. We visit Stratford at least once a year. It was a great place to raise children in the 50s, 60s, & 70s. Hope it hasn't changed too much.
My family moved to Stratford from Pennsauken in 1958 when I was 2 years old. I lived there until 1972 when we moved to Maryland. Grew up on Meadowlark Rd and attended Warwick School (now Yellin), Parkview school when it first opened and Sterling High. I have many fond memories of my childhood there including neighborhood games of "wicket", fishing and hunting snakes and turtles down at the woods along Big Timber Creek, 4th of July celebrations and Troop 111. I have lived in California for the past 27 years. Hopefully I'll hear from some of my childhood friends! You know who you are!
My life long friend, Mark Wehrle, turned me on to this website. I think its great! I grew up on Vassar Ave (where my Dad - Alex still lives)' joined the Navy and moved to Pittsburgh in 1985. I regret moving ever since. To me, Stratford still reflects old time values. I'm still a big time Eagles, Flyers, Philles and Sixers fan. Thanks again. (Mark, may your father rest in peace).
Joe, Happy New Year! Thanks for maintaining this site.

Reply: Hello, neighbor! I'm right around the corner at 102 Wellington. My wife's sister and brother-in-law are right across the street from you at 119. - Joe
My book, "The White Horse Pike" is on sale now at Sterling Pharmacy in Stratford! I've included some great photos (contributed by R.L. Long and Jim Henry) of Stratford and towns all along the Pike. Jill Maser www.jillmaser.com
My first time to this site. I lived in Stratford from 1948 to 1966. The picture of Rexon's farm brought back many happy memories, sledding on suicide hill. I graduated SHS class of 66. Spent 30 years in the computer industry and lived all over the U.S. For the past 18 years have resided in High Point, NC. I enjoyed reading the various comments of the people and places. Thanks. Rey AKA (Reynard)
ENJOYED YOUR SIGHT. MOVED TO TEXAS IN 1978, JUST BEFORE MY SENIOR YEAR AT STERLING HS. GOOD LUCK WITH THE SIGHT AND THANK YOU FOR BRINGING BACK SOME FOND MEMORIES.
Hi All! I just wanted to tell you what a learning experience it was to see all of the historic photographs of our town. THANK YOU for showing the historic side of Stratford. Aside from going away for college, I've been a proud Stratfordian for over 30 years. It's a joy to be able to raise my children in our little town. Keep up the good work! By the way, the Incollingo's Shopping Center looks wonderful with the remodeling! Laura Salvitti
Hello, Stratford! What a FANTASTIC trip down memory lane. I moved away from Stratford the summer of 1975; I was going into 9th grade. We moved to Florida, but I have always been just a bit homesick for Stratford - it was a wonderful place to grow up as a kid. We lived at 60 Longwood Drive; my family had lived in the area for ages. My grandfather, John A. Graham, had been Mayor of Magnolia long ago. My dad, David F. Heisley, owned Magnolia Knitting Mills, Heisley's Chocolates, and Warwick Auto Sales on White Horse Pike way back in the day! This is such a wonderful flashback for me. I am definitely bookmarking this site to visit again!!
Found your site by accident. It was great looking at the Stratford memories. I grew up in Stratford, first at 317 Union Ave (next to Tony's barbershop) and later 128 Cornell Ave. Graduated from Sterling in 1964 went into the Marines, and eventually left Stratford in 1970. I'm sorry I left. It's a great town and I have a lifetime of memories. Thanks for this great site. It gave me a nice warm feeling to read everything.
Aloha I've been living in Hawaii since 1985. I am currently a Senior Chief in the Navy and just went over 20 years in the Navy. Currently stationed at Seal Delivery Vehicle Team One and have a great wife and daughter. Saying Hello to my friends from the Sterling class of 84.
Hi from Cornell Ave! My husband and I are new to Stratford - just arrived April 30, 2005. I lived in Camden County my whole life and never knew what a cute little tucked away town you had here!
Hello all, from Vassar Ave!
this meeting was a joke! like they didn't know a lot of people were coming...
Hi Folks! I'm still looking for photos for my book about The White Horse Pike. I'm even offering a free copy of the finished book (autographed, of course) to the person who submits the most photos for my consideration. "The White Horse Pike" will be published by Arcadia Publishing as part of their Images of America series later this year. I'm looking for scenes along the Pike from either the late 1800s or in the years between the two World Wars (approximately 1919 - 1939). If I use your photo(s) you will receive full credit and acknolwedgement in the book. Please check those old shoe boxes in the attic and see if you might have some great old shots, and contact me at jmaser@erols.com. Thank you! Jill Maser www.jillmaser.com
just wanted to say hello and thanks for keeping this site going.
I am a local author and have just begun work on a book about the White Horse Pike. I plan to contrast the experience of Walt Whitman's documented train ride from Camden to Atlantic City in 1878 with "modern" White Horse Pike scenes as photographed between 1919 and 1939 when the automobile became affordable and the preferred mode of transportation. If you have any photographs of people, buildings or events along the White Horse Pike from circa 1878 or the period between WWI and WWII please contact me at the e-mail address below. I will be writing captions for the photos so I will also need to know something about the subject of the photo. Contributors will be credited and photos will be returned. I can also accept scanned images made to certain specifications. If all goes well, the book will be printed later this year. Thank you for your assistance, Jill Maser jmaser@erols.com
Hi Jimmy.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Sometimes I sure do miss the Stratford from my youth. Born and raised at 17 Union Ave. The 4th of July parades and sledding down Rexons hill are some of the fondest memories of my life.
You have no information on your site about the history of Stratford or a history of the old military academy. Might be nice to include that all-important data. Tom Bergbauer Tracking History columnist for the Courier-Post
went to stratford military academy from 1947 to 49. was from philly and really loved stratford the town..loved the lake swimming at the dam and iceskating in the winter. entered navy in 50 out in 54 went to acting, annou ncing and tv directing school in philly..became a diskjockey, then station manager then went to tv as sportscaster and weatherman all in richmond va. finally went to work for dept of defense as videographer then as tv director...live here in petersburg , va and am now retired and play golf. been trying to find other SMA people around those years but no luck so far.
Stratford, you gave me a great childhood! (I lived there from 1952-1971)
A BEAUTIFUL TOWN...SURROUNDED BY BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE..WORKING AS ONE...FOR SAFETY..FOR LOYALITY..AND FOR FUN..GOD BLESS STRATFORD...AND THE STRENGTH SHE HAS.
i love stratford
Just moved to Florida after 46 years.
Dear Joe: Thanks for giving me one of your Pirates ballcaps when we were growing up. Remember that? Regards, Marty
This website is like eating potato chips, I just can't stop reading all the good stuff you've got here! Anyway - I noticed you were asking for old photos. I'm not sure if you know this but Grandpop Hansen just wrote the history of Somerdale (I did the printing) for their 75th Anniversary. While scanning the old photos for the book, I came across a few that were of Stratford - like the entrance to Laurel Mills when it was just a few houses and a field, and the old Warwick Tavern. Would you be interested in those? If you or anyone else would like a copy of his book, let me know - he loves to give them out!!
Hey Joe! Love your site! Maybe you can help me here - every month or so, the Saint Gregory Girls - Class of 1977, get together and I was wondering if you have heard from anybody that was in my class? Guys are welcome too, but I haven't run into anyone personally. So far there's about 6 of us that are meeting, but we would love to catch up with more old friends. Pass on my email if you hear from or know of anybody interested!! Thank you! P.S. I love that old Christmas picture - I think we have one just like it!!
I lived in Stratford from 1950 to 1984. My mom and dad still live on Princeton Ave. My son recently purchased and moved into his own home on Jefferson Ave. Great site. Thanks!!
Moved to Stratford in October 49, 3l8 Yale Ave. My father built the house. Went into the service in 58. Some of my most fondest memories are of the 10 years I lived in Stratford. Some of the kids I grew up with are Corky Johnson, Johnny Merulla, Phil Manieri, Jim and Joe Ryan, Ron Greene, Bobby Baals. Hung on the Quaker Store's corner, played ball at the "Field" on Yale Ave, right up the street from where I lived. Loved the 4th of July. Used to sneak into the old firehouse and play basketball inside. Thats for you old time Stratford people. The old firehouse was a two story wooden building. We used to sneak in through the old coal shute. On the 2d floor there was a basketball court. How I long for the old days in "Old Stratford".
Hello from Florida!
Hi, After living 29 years in Stratford, I am now retired in N. Ft. Myers, FL. Hello to all those I left behind.
The old Stratford Diner was on the Corner of Princenton Ave and the WHP. Lester Regensberg owned the diner. Before Lester the diner was owned by a man whose last name was Gionne or something like that. He had two sons Ken and Wayne. Next to the diner going towards Harvard Ave was a little house, the name of the man who lived there was Oddley Busby, thats right Oddley not Ozzie. He used to make bird houses, dog boxes and other small wooden articles. He had them all over his front lawn. Across from the Diner was Nates soda store. This was long before he moved over to Vassar Ave. and it became Sterling Pharmacy. Nates son now runs that store. I would like to hear from anyone from that era. Lou Pfafman Maple Shade
Hey Joe- saw this link on the SAO website from work, and couldn't wait to come home and check it out. Looks like a lot of work went into this. Nice Job.
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT FOR MY HUSBAND SPC PARKER HE IS STATES SIDE NOW!!!! HIS TOUR IS FINALLY OVER AND IS COMING INTO STRATFORD ON THURSDAY MARCH 25TH, 2004 ......
I have just learned of the Stratford website - I spent my first 22 years of life in Stratford at the corner of Union and Grand Avenues. My Father, James Curtis Small built the house at l0l Union for his wife, Edna Weber Small, and my brother, Jimmy and I lived there our entire childhood. I have such wonderful memories of Stratford - including the sledding at Rexons's farm - the ice skating at Kirkwood and Laurel Lakes, the 4th of July celebrations, and the dances for teen-agers at the old Fire Hall. The dances for the kids would have been around l945 and l946 =. Another fond memory is Katy Pennypacker and her horses . She was always so generous in letting kids ride with her.
Thank you to all the entire town of Stratford for the combined effort on our Christmas. This town has made my family feel very welcome and safe while Robert is away on duty in Iraq. Thank you once again.
Joey: Good to see your EmerCam. Looks like you had a good Christmas at your house. Ours was good too. Happy New Year to all of you at the EmerHouse. Kevin
Greetings from Kuwait again. My name is Robert Parker and just moved into Stratford just before deploying. My family tells me it is a great place to live, very beautiful, and friendly neighbors. I finally get two weeks of rest and relaxation and look forward to experiencing some of what my family has shared with me in letters. Since I spend most of my time in Iraq, I enjoy having some time to check out this site and feel as close to home as possible. So, thanks for keeping it up. Spc. Parker
Hello, I just wanted to say hello from Kuwait.
Reply: From your email address, I'm going to guess you're not Kuwaiti but, in fact, USA. Thanks for everything, Robert!
I can't believe it..about Princeton School..I just read the news archive and I always thought that school was sturdy...I hope that no one was there that day that the ceiling cave in..and the craziest thing bout that story was I lived right next door to the school..I played in the playground every single day..playing stick ball with the bigg boys..lol..It's amazing..I saw that pic of the school and my heart just jumped..I wish they had a pic of the house next door to it...I would love to see my old house that I grew up in again..can anyone do that for me and email it to me? I would so very much appreciate it from the bottom of my heart. Thanks Dawn Kinsella
Hi again..you know I just realized something I never got to thank the person that created this site..awesome job!!! And thank you, you have opened up so many more memories for me. I sit here and read all of these comments and replies and it's funny I haven't been home to Stratford in like 20 years and I still remember how everything was and even street names..I even still remember my old street address which was 106 Princeton Ave. 08084..lol..man...I hope that still one day someone who remembers me like Colleen Batemen Randy Randeville Paul Zigarilla Tracey Pacific Rachal Smith ect.will one day find this site too and email me. I miss my hometown so very much ...So many great memories of a cozy town..the day I left at age 11 was the most saddest day of my life. Thanks for those memories Stratford...I hope that the fire dept still goes down the street every christmas with santa at the top throwing toys and candy out to the children because that was one of the most fondest memories that I have. Panama city firemen don't do that they sit on a trailer and toss candy canes behind a police car..lol..and go real fast..lol..Again thanks for the memories and thank you so much for this site. Sincerely Dawn Kinsella (Perron)
HI all: Looking for anyone that went to Princeton School that may have the old class pictures to get a copy of them. Mine were discarded when parents moved and would like to have a copy from my classmates. Thanks, Mark Lustig
Reply: Good luck, Mark. We do have the Class of '51 at http://www.stratford.net/dongray/index.htm . Also, we have some new photos of the school itself at http://www.stratford.net/images/new_photos/princeton/big/Page.html

Reply: Thanks, Cool D. I'm guessing you're referring to my car itself??
I have just found this site today and am really glad I did. I moved from Stratford 4 years ago after getting married. My husband and I live in England and we cannot wait to see my home town November (it's been over two years). Thank you for allowing me to briefly look back.
Reply: Kelly, if you're ever near Greenwich, stop in and see my cousin, a Haddonfield native.. He's the Vice-Chancellor (that's actually the BIG BOSS) at the University of Greenwich. Got any kids looking at college?

Reply: Yes, Stratford and the White Horse Pike are still there, D.
Visited with my sis in Stratford 3 years ago. LOVED it. How about that whitehorse pike? I'll stick to Chef Boyardee instead of PAppino's....one thing I didn't like! Surrounding areas great...esp. Berlin Market and Marlton. Atlantic City great. Philly a blast!
Reply: Personal thought...WHP sucks. Needs to be repaved in the worst way.
sweet site i think u guys did a good job.
Reply: Thanks. Matt
Joe, I miss seeing the photos of the Princeton Ave. School. Guess they had to be removed to make room for more recent photos. It's just that I attended that school in the late 40's and I miss not seeing them as part of the photo collection.
Reply: I emailed Pat privately but, for everyone else, the pictures are still up at http://www.stratford.net/images/Stratford.html
Reply 2: 11.21.03 Here's some new pictures... http://www.stratford.net/images/new_photos/princeton/big/Page.html *****Pat's email address bounced. Looking for a new one. Any help, Wayne R., anybody?****
Don't ever discontinue this website. It's great for those of us who like to reminisce about the good old days (50+ years ago!).
Reply: Thanks, Pat. That's the only reason it's here.

I'd like to update my e-mail address as it's changed from what shows in the archives and address book. It's no longer ubilam55@hotmail.com. Now it's pwilliams@removethis.sciti.com.
Joe, I just want to thank you personally and publicly for all of the support that you give the town of Stratford and its organizations. I had the job of preparing the opening day agenda for the 50th anniversary of SAO (Formerly Stratford Father and Son Association). You so graciously plastered my "Wanted" sign over your home page for over 3 months. It worked. I received two e-mails as a result of the "poster", which led me to seven names and addresses to invite the ex's. Four were able to come, one had just moved away, and twoo were sick and not able to attend. Those that showed had some fond memories of the organization and what it meant to them. I tried to thank them for their attendance, but instead, they thanked me. Even Dr. Brown, Superintendent of Schools, was impressed. He hails from Winslow Twp. and said for a large town, they do nothing compared to our traditional opening day. When I got home yesterday, after spending four hours up at Yellin, making sure that the picture day event went smooth, then running over to the field, watching my fellow Board members and many volunteers tramsforming the quagmire of Hagerty, into a field suitable for opening day, and cleaning up afterwards, there were two messages from the ex-presidents thanking me for a wonderful day. That makes it all very rewarding. Thank you for your constant contributions to our community. I grew up in Cherry Hill, but my heart and soul are in this town forever. Tom
Reply: Tom, thanks for the kind words. I have several reasons for keeping up this site and doing what I can (and financial gain certainly isn't one of them (although we here at Stratford Online would definitely consider an offer of Corproate Sponsorship!)). As far as baseball goes, I suppose it's because of the same love of the game that so many of us share. With that in mind, allow me to post my own entry here. I took it from the website of the league I play for (go Reds!)...
HE IS JUST A LITTLE BOY
(An Opening Day Poem)
-----------------------
He stands at the plate,
with his heart pounding fast.
The bases are loaded,
the die has been cast.
Mom and Dad cannot help him,
he stands all alone.
A hit at this moment,
would send the team home.
The ball meets the plate, he swings and he misses.
There's a groan from the crowd,
with some boos and some hisses.
A thoughtless voice cries,
strike out the bum.
Tears fill his eyes,
the games no longer fun.
So open your heart
and give him a break.
For it's moments like this,
a man you can make.
Please keep this in mind,
when you hear someone forget.
He is just a little boy,
and not a man yet.

I have been a resident of Stratford since 1970. Great web site !!!!
In the "Can you guess these people" are you looking for answers? I know quite a few of them, my gosh, I think I was 10 when both of those pictures were taken, but I know alot of those people
Reply: John, I sent you an email (in reply to yours at my Yahoo address), maybe it didn't get there. Yes, I am, in fact, looking for the answers! Let's have 'em!
Wow, where do I start on here. Lived most of my life in Stratford, 10 Homestead Road, right behind what was the A&P. 5 doors down from Dr Herring, about 10 from Dr. Silverstein, he was a dentist that lived on the Corner of Homestead and Winding Way. (why any surveyor/civil engineer decided to name that portion of road Winding Way to this day is not clear to me. How can a street continue across Longwood Drive, through the A&P parking lot and then reappear on the other side as the same name is beside me) Oh did I mention I am now a Surveyor in Atlanta, Georgia. Anyway, the memories that I read on here are ones I still rememebr. The house I lived in was the only house I knew for 36 years till I moved here. My parents, Jack and Kitty Farrell sold the house a month after I moved here. I've been home a few times to see the old place, can say it looks the same to me,but thats just me. My parents are well and living happily in retirement in Florida, though they do come home for 3 months in the summer. My mom says she will never stay down there year round as New Jersey is her home. So she stay' with my sister Eileen in her house in Blackwood. For those that remember, my mother was first the secrtary for the chief of police, Mr Washart for a few years, till she became tax clerk for the next, 15 or 20, not really sure how long. My dad was on the planning board as well as the Sterling board of Education for a time being as well. My parents had 6 children, Mike Joe Mary, Me, Eileen and Kathleen. We are all healthy and happy and at least 3 are still living home in NJ. Kathleen is in Charlotte, Joe is in the Tampa, FL area, but as mom says we all come home for Christmas. I still have memories of all those times that other have written about, yes the big old farm field in from of my house which is now the old A&P shopping center, Sally the crossing guard ( I had forgotten about her) Sterlings championship football team back in the 70's I graduated class of 78. Well this is very long, sorry but I could really go on and on forever. If anyone wants any more information, please do drop me a line. Oh and John Clark, John Becker, Beck as we all call him is living in Knoxville, about 4 hours from me, We see each other at least once a year, the guy's thing, Phil (Mesisca) Harry (Weidman) Joe (Maugeri) Beck, and George (Foster) oh and ps #2 the old Quaker store. Who remembers who use to own it or just run it, I'm not quite sure if they owned it. The Answer: The Hankers. Ok, thanks for letting me write all of this

Great Site! My folks and I moved to Stratford in 1957. I remember sledding at Rexon's Farm as a child. I attended Princeton School from first through fifth grades and remember going to the diner behind Princeton School. I'll pass this site along. THANK YOU!
Hey, Am I the only person in town that is a little more than a little disturbed that there could be a ladder leaning on a building and a guy bleeding to death on the ground below it, and none of our esteemed police force noticed it before a store employee finds it at 8:30 the following morning. Aren't the police supposed to be patrolling the neighborhood and the local businesses? Coffee must have been good at WaWa that night.
syaa is number 1#
Thank you for the resources. Keep up the good work!
It is nice to look back to were I grew up. I was also a vol.firefighter there back in 73-75. I just put in my 27th year with the St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue.

Hello, could anyone tell me if this is the same Dr. Sullivan that lived at 2 Warwick Road sometime in the 50's or 60's? My Mom and I are trying to find out some info about this address. She lives there now and we have heard some things about the house and wanted to know it's history. ANY info would help. Thanks! Elaine
Reply: heard there was a fallout shelter somewhere on the property

Just love this site!!!
Just happened on to this web site and fell in love. So many great memories of "My Hometown". I attend Parkview, and Yellin Jr. But never went on to high school. Parents moved us to Florida when I was 13. But I sure do remember riding in the 4th of July parade, with a card in the spokes and red white and blue strimers blowing in the wind. I have been looking for anyone that might know the where abouts of any of the Petruzzi's that lived in what was then called "New" Stratford. The youngest daughter and I hung out at the A&P - with our long hair and short tops and bell bottom pants - just waiting for the day we were adults. Thanks so much for the great web site - - - Elaine
Great website
If everyone wants a free based high school alumni site try this one on for size- http://www.alumnicrawler.com/login.php (broken link). Went to Stratford High graduated in 1981-- 80$ per person for our last reunion-- WE can rent out Booth and have a picnic for less.. If those of you who are in contact with anyone from the class of 1981 or are from the class of 1981 please drop me an email. I did not go to the reunion due to the 80 dollar charge.. Let's do the right thing and rent out Booth and forget this pomp and BS.. More people will attend. I was in every senior play from 1979 - 1981,at SHS I was in one of the last shows at Shakespeare theatre- Fiddler on the roof with Theordore Bikel. I was 2nd place Mr. Connecticut and 6th Place Mr. America in 1995, I am personal trainer (part time) I work out all the time and have been doing so for 25+ yrs. I am sure people remember when I was in the weight room at SHS all the time.. I perform in local shows, and have been doing this for a while. Last show I was in was Earth and Sky. I am a ham radio advance operator. So get in touch with me via my email.. thanks
Editor's Note: This would be intended for Stratford High School in Connecticut alumni.
